Ain't transparency grand?
Al Cleland Jr. has been dropped by his management, sponsors and the World Surf League, though the first two just scrubbed his name from websites without issuing statement and the WSL never named him, after an incident in Tahiti deemed “very serious.”
It is Al Cleland Jr., though, and maybe he comes out innocent and maybe it was all a big misunderstanding, but it was still Al Cleland Jr. who was dropped and/or suspended.
In any case, three days late and who knows how many dollars short, the International Surfing Association just announced it would suspend “the athlete concerned,” whoever that might be.
Per the statement:
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is deeply concerned by recent reports of serious allegations of abuse within the surfing community.
The ISA Executive Committee has decided to provisionally suspend the athlete concernedfrom participating in ISA-sanctioned events, pending further investigation and review in accordance with the ISA’s applicable rules and safeguarding procedures.
This precautionary decision has been taken in the interest of athlete safety and welfare, and does not constitute a determination of wrongdoing. The ISA remains committed to respecting due process, confidentiality, and the rights of all individuals concerned.
The decision is grounded in the ISA’s well-established Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy and Code of Ethics, which reflect the ISA’s commitment to the highest standards of integrity, respect, and athlete protection, in alignment with the principles and values of the Olympic Movement.
The ISA firmly believes that all athletes have the right to participate in sport in a safe and respectful environment, free from harassment, violence, and abuse of any kind.
Safeguarding and athlete welfare remain fundamental priorities of the ISA. We will continue working with our National Federations and partners to uphold these principles throughout the global surfing community.
The ISA will not comment further on the individual circumstances of this matter at this stage.

Heck my daughter (32) has a masters degree in English literature, and considering a doctorate.
I didn’t discourage her to swear when young, but to be aware of it’s use as an honest expression of language.

Well the WSL is just some rich guy tax dodge/wifes toy who announced it to quickly wipe their hands of the matter when it became apparent it was going to come out sooner rather than later.
Whereas the ISA is apparently closer to the Olympic ideals, and French is the official Olympic language, and France owns Tahiti, and Tahiti is where the recent (alleged) crimes took place and whose police (and subsequently) laws will decide what happens with the accusations, it kinda makes sense that ISA waited till now before making their stance public.
All those ‘ands’ and ‘commas’ above probably each take another week or so of paper pushing in the good old French foot-dragging way.
And now it might not be surprising if the Tahitian/French cops have got a prompting that they should start looking into the matter, after lunch, and a nap.

In our quest to find the best, every now and then one must experience the worst for good measure.
In need of the sight of the sea, the kids and I rolled in and posted up to an oceanfront hotel at one of the most infamous stretches of beach on the planet.
A place so bad a local band were inspired to name themselves after it.
They called themselves Butthole Surfers, because this beach is known as the butthole of all surfspots in the United States.
Nestled up against one of the worlds most industrially polluted waterways, it is an endless procession of broken, smelly, dirty, and perennially onshore conglomeration of “waves” that roll in with no discernable reason to be.
The stretch is a remnant of old Americana, with amusment piers and structures built in spite of the sea rather than in harmony with it. A catastrophe waiting for its moment to happen.
But after a long road trip I was stoked to see it along with the sloppiest of sloppy head high dribblers rolling in at a 6 second clip.
Not that I wanted to surf that slop, but it calmed the mind, momentarily helping me forget about the news and all the shit that comes with it. A constant barrage of depression bundled into an aggregated bundle of crap.
Just seems to get worse and worse every day.
I find it really hard to immerse yourself in those murky waters and not come out fully embracing nihilism.
The waves looked bleak, but as the morning gave way to the afternoon, two surfers paddled out, then a third. They were finding some little connectors that came up randomly among the wash.
They had it all to themselves, and they clearly were having a good time squeezing all the fun juice out of the anus of all surf spots.
They eventually got out, looking happy to have surfed and making me jealous I hadn’t.
It reminded me that when things look like shit, you have to search for the finer points of the turds you see floating all around you.
Toxicity is a permanent part of our existence, and we must strive to endure it.
So yeah Galveston, dirty like the world, but iconic in its own right.
Should you find yourself there, I suggest looking for those elusive bright spots.
Because holding on to hope and trying to stay clean from the dirt of the world is what gets us through the day and helps us get to sleep at night.

Here I was reading the Occy biography a few weeks ago and reading about the whole surf world remarking in hindsight about how tragic Occy’s drug fuelled depression had been. Much soul searching by all involved. Deep misgivings and sighs of gladness that such 80s extravagant hedonism would no longer be tolerated or accepted by the sport. Occy’s misdeeds had germinated a new spirit of community, honesty and transparency at all levels, particularly the administrative, bureaucratic and corporate side of the tour. Amongst many personally moving quotes ,there was Tom Carroll saying that it was sad about Occy’s addiction but he didn’t think the same rounding-of-the-wagons would happen anymore….which at the time of publication was not long before Andy Irons death and probably in the midst of Tom Carroll’s own hidden drug addiction.
Nothing changes, mate. The po-faced declarations, denials and secrecy are same as they ever were.
And you know what? I don’t particularly give a fuck. It’s not really any of my business. The human condition is what it is. I just want to see surfing and hear honest commentary. I don’t need a WSL struggle session about the evils lurking in the hearts of men. Just be authentic enough to tell me he’s gone and call the surf action with integrity and verve.

Someone tried this sort of stunt recently in skateboarding.
It ended when the person doing the exposing was outed as exhibiting similar behaviors to those being exposed.

I’ve also said I take attention-grabbing claims made by exes worth a grain of salt.
And I’ve also pointed the finger at Boomers for the sexual revolution and normalization of copious use of drugs and alcohol – which absolutely plays a part in the negative behaviors we see coming from men and women (boys and girls too) these days.
I’d perhaps do a little self reflection to decide why you insist on trial by social media rumor. Pretty lame yourself, wouldn’t you say?
