The Great White shark, listed as vulnerable in Australia for the past thirty-ish years, has grown in such numbers, and attacks so frequent, local governments have taken the step of creating giant swimming cages on Perth beaches.
In mid-September, Greg O’Neill, 63, was eaten alive by a large Great White, the animal thrashing him to and fro in front of onlookers, while swimming twenty yards off Sorrento Beach. One week before the Sorrento hit, Geraldton surfer Mal Ismail lost his leg to a ten-foot Great White.
Earlier in the year, two spear fishermen were killed by Great Whites within two weeks of each other.
Anyway, no one’s got an appetite for killing a few near-shore Great Whites every year so Perth swimmers at three beaches, Cottesloe, Quinns Beach and Coogee, will now enjoy the relative protection, last year a Bronzie got through so it ain’t a hunnert percent, of nylon and steel cables fashioned into cages of sorts. Here, families can swim without being bitten in half by the venerated Great White.
The last time a state government had a light cull of dangerous sharks, Colin Barnett was Premier and seven people had died in three years.
Between January and April 2014, baited drum lines off seven WA beaches caught 172 sharks, mostly Tigers, under a federal exemption from laws protecting Great Whites.
Barnett’s plan to extend it to 2017 died that September when the Environmental Protection Authority recommended against it, citing uncertainty over Great White shark numbers.
Premier Roger Cook, facing three deaths this year, refuses to follow suit, offering only a catch-and-kill order after Greg O’Neill’s Sorrento death and $5 million for tagging and drones.
The shark was never caught, with fisheries officers pulling their gear the next day.

Right here are some facts for yous. Since me and my still wife separated about 5 years ago my daughter has always chosen to spend most time with me and that is currently from Thursday evening till Monday evening.
