Mexico’s Al Cleland Jr. has been immediately suspended by the World Surf League and, allegedly, dropped by sponsors Quiksilver and Monster following “allegations of a deeply serious nature” that occurred in Tahiti back in August.
Currently number 24 in the world, and missing the cut by two spots, Cleland Jr. would have been seen next, on the grandest stage, in the 2026 Championship Tour’s final event at the Banzai Pipeline.
The World Surf League issued the following statement following early reportage by master surf journalist Nick Carroll who wrote, “The incident is understood to have occurred after the final day of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro and involved a teenaged Australian female surfer and at least three men.”
The World Surf League (WSL) confirms that a competitor on the 2026 Men’s Championship Tour has been suspended after the WSL was recently made aware of allegations of a deeply serious nature involving the competitor.
The allegations involve conduct in relation to a private gathering in Tahiti in August. The gathering was not affiliated with the WSL.
All WSL competitors are bound by the conduct standards outlined in the WSL Rule Book, at all times. After being informed of the allegations, the WSL Discipline Committee took prompt action and issued a provisional suspension to the competitor from all WSL events.
The WSL is committed to upholding the values and integrity of the sport on behalf of all surfers, and the broader surfing community.
The WSL is continuing to follow its process and has offered assistance to relevant authorities.

According to some reports the alleged incident was between three local blokes and an female Aussie teenager, who could very well over the age of consent (16) in Australia and Tahiti.
There is suggestion that Al wasn’t directly involved.
