Post draws support from Kelly Slater who writes, "I'm disgusted to hear all this."
A female professional surfer has publicly accused Mexico’s Al Cleland Jr. of sexual and physical abuse during a relationship that began when she was 17, a day after the World Surf League confirmed a CT surfer had been provisionally suspended over “allegations of a deeply serious nature.”
The Papeete prosecutor’s office told Radio 1 Tahiti , however, that no investigation has been opened in French Polynesia.
She writes that she had told Cleland she would speak publicly if she learned he had treated anyone else the same way, and that news of the current allegations prompted her to do so.
The allegations have not been tested in any court or tribunal. Cleland has not been charged with any offence in connection with them.
The post had drawn more than 16,000 likes within five hours.
Among those commenting were two-time world champion Tyler Wright, who thanked her for her courage, 11-timer Kelly Slater (“I’m disgusted to hear all this”), three-time world champion Gabriel Medina, Selema Masekela and Hawaiian hard-man Johnny B Gomes who wrote,
“They lucky I wasn’t in Tahiti bcus the cops would never find their body’s again.”
The WSL’s statement on the suspension says the matter relates to a private, non-WSL gathering in Tahiti in August and that the league has offered assistance to the relevant authorities.
The WSL has given no further detail.
