“Some uncomfortable truths exist about sharks that kill humans.”
Four days back, one of Western Australia’s most decorated journalists pushed back against the ol narrative that any Great White attack is entirely accidental, they don’t got hands so gotta have a little fiddle with their teeth, and that any increase, unprecedented or not, is due to maybe increase numbers of people using the ocean or whatever.
After three fatal Great White attacks in WA this year, as well a surfer losing his leg one month back, journalist Bret Christian, wrote that “some uncomfortable truths exist about sharks that kill humans.”
His central claim concerned a 2016 tracking study, which he wrote showed the same three tagged sharks repeatedly returning to metropolitan beaches. He asked whether the finding had been played down because it could create pressure to remove protected animals. Christian also drew on the “rogue shark” theory where a few Great Whites are doin’ the killing.
“Academics join others who poo-poo the ‘rogue shark’ theory and campaign heavily against removing sharks for ‘revenge’, though this would at least eliminate the possibility that the same shark may return and endanger others,” Christian writes.
In the aftermath of the fatal attack of a swimmer at Sorrento, the man eaten whole, the state’s former chief fisheries scientist, Jimmy Pen, called for an independent review of the population’s size and long-term trends.
Penn linked the likely growth to surging prey, including salmon, migrating humpback whales and expanding fur seal colonies, some of which lie near recent fatal attack sites at Rottnest Island and Albany. Ignoring that food supply, he told a local newspaper, “defies biological logic.”
He said that before protection Great White numbers were kept “reasonable” due to the by catch of shark gill net fishermen.
With beaches becoming increasingly off limits and ocean swimmers now doin’ their circuits in waist-deep water, you think it might’ve been time for the government to a little dirty work and start icing near-shore Great Whites.
Ain’t gonna happen.
Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis formally rejected any idea of killing Great Whites and, instead, and like NSW, the state gov will invest five-and-a-half million in drones, helicopter patrols, shark tagging, shark monitoring network receives and to do a little research on alternative tech.
“I don’t think that there is an appetite to start culling a shark when we have spent a few decades bringing it back from extinction,” Jarvis said.

To paraphrase what John Wayne said in an old Western film, the only good great white is a dead great white.
No shit, Penn. Fisheries have rebounded due to enviro protections and that fishery includes sharks. Cull, not cull, do whatever the fuck you want, but there are more sharks because there are more fish, because humans have done a decent job cleaning up the joint.
Maybe God is trying to cull Australians ? I bet if all yous Aussies repents to Jesus it will reduce down to acceptable levels of occurrence . Great Whites gotta eat too!
Just saying…
You lost me when you capitalized “god”.
Shocker
Missed all the frothing about the merits of Malibu, but the most overrated crowded right “point” in California is absolutely no question Swamis, or Swarmis as known locally.
It’s not a terrible wave, but it is weirdly sectiony, with a lot of backing off holes, little shallows that make it look like it barrels here and there but nearly impossible to set up. Shifty to where it’s hard to make normal well-timed turns even though the wave has open faces then demand them. Crowd-wise ‘s a total fucking zoo, can be 60 people out when it’s blown and inconsistent. Outside of La Jolla and the Cliffs it has the douchiest “locals” in San Diego, and a magnet for alternative surf craft and Surfline Man types. It has an annoying hang around parking lot scene too, hula hoops guitars all the other stupid Neo hippie van life nonsense, crusty alcoholic bro brahs on dog shit cruiser bikes, etc.
At least Malibu is an honest real life connecting point break, not a malformed chunk of chaotic reef appended to a coastal out sweep that looks like it should be a legitimate point.
Funny cause I surfed it with my daughter last month and had a good time.
Of course it was off season and we were there cause it was way softer than other spots that day, and we scored a prime parking spot during the Labor Day weekend.
Overrated for sure, but still semi iconic in its own way and another one off the bucket list.
that wave is only good when it’s like 10 feet, which happens once every 5 years.
I love it when lazy waves get 10ft (5ft). It creates such an interesting dynamic.
a whole new face.
Stoked to see Kade Matson make his heat today. Pretty sure that means he will qualify for the Tour next year. For sure if he makes his next heat.
Not a huge fan of his surfing but respect his grind. And that wave he charged ( and wiped out) on at Pipe a couple years ago remains one of the scariest situations I’ve seen there. Balls out!
Sorry Gwen. I am the opposite. I am the yin to your yang. I’m stoked when Kade doesn’t make a heat.
Hahaha cunts fucked ay
I get it. I just respect it when an innocent so cal kid goes beast mode on a demonic Pipe death wave in his rookie year on Tour.
« No appetite for a cull » had to be the poorest choice of words for anything at this moment farrrk.
Xox
Still cant comment on this godforsaken platform
Except for that one
No disqus log in for you???
How’s your hangover? I see that you are the “I love you guys” type of drunk.
100% , although I kind of love you sober too
loading up on Advil , so not the worst ever
When beach grit does actually load, and then does actually let me log in, I wrote a comment and then the post comment button does not work. Seems to be a day by day proposition
Oh you see it worked.

The secret is to finger your bumhole.

You need toothpaste and Vasoline. Ask Strayan Cunt, he knows the process.
As a 14 yr old in 1980 I got a shirt like this from Soldier Of Fortune magazine.
Much to the horror of my mum and teachers (Dad was sweet with it though, being his industry, as it were……).
Wish I still had it, should get another.
Fuck the sharks !
absolute classic
Yeah my old man (89) is now in a dementia place but fit as a fiddle.
Admittedly I’m a bit brassed off that our family have to pay for it considering the official ‘stuff’ he did back then which wasn’t exactly conducive to a continued balanced mindset.
Poor old bugger…
I bought three of the same hat with that image on it from an army surplus store. Lost ’em all by letting ADHD sort it out.
The West Australian and the Federal governments in Australia should get out of the business of protecting large sharks and get back to the business of protecting PEOPLE.
It seems both ridiculous and absurd that people are dying because government officials think it is more important to protect sharks than to protect people.
Can anyone explain this bureaucratic absurdity where rigid regulatory frameworks, legal protections, and environmental mandates are applied so strictly that they override basic human intuition and immediate safety concerns?
all right, really going to sleep, 10:50 sac town time, long day , have a 530am flight, godspeed all my lovely angels , hope fucking uncle van winkle sings you all gentle lullabies
I missed the love fest last night! Safe travels today, and I hope that phone turns up.
ha ha, was having quite the run there for a bit lol , right now my aged body is punishing me for going a little too hard , not a young fella anymore
There was the Rocks lovefest and there was the other side of just bashing and puffing up. Such a fucking weird BTL to read after the fact.
It was weird and also a bit difficult to follow with the comments still not nesting coherently. I did enjoy the surf stories in between the insults.
Old Jack certainly gets himself wound up and bent out shape pretty easily ay hahaha
I enjoyed his travelogue. I’m not sure where it took a turn.
I don’t think any of us do mate
and fwiw, fucking Malibu may suck balls mostt of the time but on the right swell angle it pumps, or at least that’s what my bros rich Marx and jack me off tell me, and fuck it I’m going to ride or die w/ those mother fucking legends, so fuck all you Aussies shit talking our waves
ps have never surfed Malibu bc the val’s scare me off , so who the fuck knows but damn it give me rich Marx/jack me or give me death you down under mother fuckers
Funny part is all I did was post some thoughts about a spot I hadn’t been to in 40 years and now I am a Malibu local.
If you happen to be there give it a go is all.
Hope your head isn’t ringing off too hard.
and the motherfucking bitch of it all is that I’ve got the most recent surfer’s journal sitting here in my bag that I could have been reading and perusing instead of getting drunk off my ass, and instead I chose the devil’s juice — god damn it, DR, write something to distract me from the fucking liquor, lol
Better to spend your money on something guarantee happy ending.
you get me Mindy, you really get me
fuck it, no happy endings here, just bleary eyed stupors and ramblings on a surf blog where the commenters all love shitty waves, or at least that’s what I heard from the cunt
Hahaha I love pissed Rocks, he’s in the same state most of the Strayans are when they post on here so makes heaps more sense
lol, I’m so fucking blasted right now, tried to sleep but then thought, ‘wtf, I bet the cunt is talking some bullshit right now, I better respond’ ha ha
Jesus Christ, I need to stop drinking, ha
you’ll be right mate- cold shower and coffee when you wake up.
You were on fire last night!
a hard day’s night as they say , lol , that devil bourbon was working its filthy magic !!! Paying for it this morning , though !
What is your Bourbon of choice?
last night it was some Elijah Craig special barrel , or at least that’s what I think they told me
I’m not super picky like some and don’t consider myself a connoisseur in this field by any means , but I’ll usually land on some Woodford reserve if I can’t make up my mind about anything else fancier/cooler
Rare issue without one of my damn interviews!
ha ha , you know I love you bro , 24 sheets gone and all I can think about is making sure BG and DR are all straight lol , pretty sure I did a couple full bottles of van pappy solo tonight , lost track a few hours ago but the world is fuckng wonderful but for the damn phone biz
hugs and kisses
Our little surf town just had about 8 shark encounters in 10 days or so. That’s among a core population of maybe 30-40 surfers spread over 50 odd kms of coast.
Thankfully a new, warmer current has pushed onto the coast so maybe things will settle down. Fingers crossed.
Swap the Whites for bulls!
had someone just down there- she said she was looking for people to surf with
Yeah, solo surfs ain’t so much fun anymore. Crowds are the new offshore.
Really ?
In my opinion solo surfs never were fun, especially cos most of my surfing was always done in out of the way places that took a decent walk to get too anyway.
Heck, all my best times in the water have always been with good friends.
Surfing on your own always seemed a weird and kinda desperate thing to me, not really ‘fun’ as such, challenging, yes, but not really fun.
But most of the places I’ve always gone took a mission to get to, and even in popularised spots having a good crew of mates seemed better.
Of course getting great waves is always awesome, but the actual act of surfing itself was always a secondary thing when I come to think of it in hindsight.
To get awesomely great waves on my own always seemed kind of empty and soul-less, kinda like wanking rather than fucking, as it were…
But hey, I guess that’s just me.
P.S.
Did I mention I hate ‘surfers’ as much as I hate man-eating sharks ?
You did Beery but I don’t believe you mate.
You spend all your spare time hanging out here with other surfers- I think you are fond of your fellow surfers.
the fondest , posting beautiful pics of his boards , etc etc
“Surfing on your own always seemed a weird and kinda desperate thing to me, not really ‘fun’ as such, challenging, yes, but not really fun”
Are you Filipino or Indonesian?
Many surfers from these two areas have commented to me they find western surfers who want to surf their secret spots alone and never share anything with anyone to be rather strange – surfing is a fun thing to do, so why wouldn’t you want to share waves with your friends?
Weird school holidays. Town centre is crowded but surf is empty bar locals.
Took a drive last week down to one of the premier break wall waves in the world. It was full pumping spitting tubes, pitching rounder than it was high. Sunny day, sheet glass conditions. Middle of QLD and NSW school hols.
4 guys out- 3 boogs and a stand-up.
3 went in before I paddled out. Me and a boog for hrs until the wind came up.
Went up the coast to the next break wall wave. It was hectic, DOH spitting barrels, but lots of water moving and closeouts to dodge. No one out. No one checking.
I’m ashamed to say, that despite considerable mental torment, I declined the offer of spitting left tubes and went flathead fishing instead.
Just could not get my head around sitting out there solo.
I swear the shark thing has radically altered the crowds around here.
There are hyper crowded waves, where safety in numbers rules and large stretches of coast, including world class waves that are now lightly or rarely surfed.
It was the best of times, It was the worst of times.
hahaha- exactly.
Never thought I’d be surfing these world class waves so uncrowded.
Save up some coin and fly over to surf Malibu mate, it fucking pumps and is on every well travelled surfers buck list apparently hahaha
lots of cute chicks around – heaven as a single man.
could write a song about each one of those California girls.
Can I do the video and casting ?
“ The girls all get so tan”
felt like I needed to both up and downvote that one
You couldn’t handle it.
Surfers would be mean to you and hurt your feelings to the point you would never want to go back ever again.
