A couple days back, the Australian pro-ish surfer Lennix Smith posted a wildly entertaining breakdown of his recent encounter with an Italian ex-pat surfer in the Mentawai Islands.
Lennix, who is twenty-one, posted a video of the Italian, identified as Edoardo Puddu, owner of Shardana West Sumbawa, dropping on on him and, with a wild light dancing in his dreamy European eyes, threatening all sorts of things, bust knees thereby ending his budding career and so on.
After dropping in on me, this guy paddles up to me as fast as he can, grabs my board, kicks it out from underneath me and screams: “I will fucking kill you. I will kill you. You just fucked up big time. I’ve been in Indo for a long time. Punch me, pussy. Punch me. Punch me. I dare you. I will kill you. I will smash your knee.”
And I’m like, “What the hell? Chill out, bro.”
And he’s like, “No, you fucked up. You snaked me. You snaked me, you fucking idiot. I will kill you. Why you laughing at me? Why you laughing?”
And I’m just like, “What the hell, bro? Chill out.”
Then for about ten minutes straight he kept telling me he was going to kill me, smash my knee and ruin my surf career, and that he didn’t give a fuck. Then he started doing this [throat-cutting gesture] at me, and I was like, what the hell even is that?
Commenters were a who’d who of the world’s best.
Tom Carroll wrote, “Nicely handled Lennix. He barely made it to his feet – however in his mind he was getting barrelled. Interesting times.”
And sexy senior Shane Dorian, pointedly, “There are Indonesians and then there are foreigners, there is no in between. Living there does not make someone a local.”

Update: so this guy was taken off his boat by police, made to come to the villas I’m staying at. I sat down with the police and gave them a statement on what happened. They then told me I have 2 options.
Option 1. Was to sign off on a piece of paper that I accept his apology. On that peice of paper is stated that if he is reported again anywhere in Indonesia by anyone he will be picked up by police and put straight into the pig pen. And on that note he also signed off on another piece of paper admitting to doing what he did.
Option 2. If I didn’t accept his apology he would’ve got locked up and I would’ve had to of gone to court and do that whole deal Which is pretty classic but stuff that no way I would’ve done that.
He also wanted me to take down the video I posted and said it was illegal in Indonesia and he’ll get me for deformation. I looked at him and laughed and said “ your dreaming buddy “ and he goes “ I’m not signing the papers then “. I started laughing and said “ well it’s up-to you mate do you wanna go to jail or not hahahahaha “ he then shut up and signed his life away. He never said any form of apology to my face but wanted me to apologise to him for some reason…. this guy hasn’t learnt his lesson at all either , I’ve had multiple messages from people saying that he’s continued to be a grub in the water over here in the mentawaiis. I never condone any hatred towards anyone but all this will be a good lesson for the big fella.

The main motivation here was to save the face of his pizza joint.
Had my funnest surf for a long time this morning. Not big ( head high ) but the combo of longer swell period, angle and surface conditions were just magic. A couple of us out for the first hour. Maybe it was the mere fact of a couple of hours reprieve from the past week of four hour return drives and full on hospital visits everyday for the past week with a desperately ill father? Whatever it was that made today seem so special I’ll take it. I’ll grab it with both hands.
A bit of water time, some exercise, talking shit with mates in an insanely beautiful setting and a seriously groomed sandbank …..that’s all it takes to reset the soul and confront the onslaught of shit which life sometimes throws at you.

The Lowdown:
The outlook for Cloud 9 has improved: 30W is forecast to stall for about two days, so the swell now looks like it will last longer. The wind is the weak point, and there is no sign of offshore southwest.
My rough estimate is 2.5-3.5 m offshore at the 1-2 November peak, then 2-3 m on 3-4 November, ±1 m. That’s solid to large for Cloud 9 and will be better at high tide.
