Hammer, nail, coffin! Thanks for the laughs Rip Curl!
In what you’d think will be the final nail in the ol’ Rip Curl coffin, Bluestar Alliance, a brand management company that bought Hurley seven years ago, sacked most of the team and milked its titties until it became what it is today, withered and unpleasant to cup, is doin’ its due diligence as it prepares to buy Kathmandu aka KMD, owners of Rip Curl.
KMD, which is listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges, said on Monday that it had granted Bluestar exclusivity for about four weeks. The period can be extended under certain conditions, and KMD said it hoped to finalise a binding agreement by Dec. 23.
The approach comes after a shitty ol stretch for KMD, which posted a loss of more than $300 million in the 2026 financial year.
Bluestar has been buying real aggressively. Last year it bought the workwear chain Dickies from VF Corporation. The year before, it acquired the streetwear label Off-White from the luxury conglomerate LVMH. Its portfolio also includes Scotch & Soda, Palm Angels and Elie Tahari.
KMD warned that a deal was not a fait accompli.
“There is no certainty at this time that this process will result in receipt of a binding proposal, or that any transaction will ultimately be consummated,” the company said, according to The Financial Review. It added, “The board has not made, and the granting of exclusivity should not be taken as, a recommendation of any transaction.”
KMD has not disclosed the indicative price Bluestar offered. The Financial Review reported that Bluestar was expected to have offered a substantial premium to secure exclusivity.
The sale process has drawn wide interest. About a dozen parties expressed interest in buying some or all of KMD, The Financial Review reported. The company operates 318 stores and supplies thousands of wholesale customers around the world.
KMD bought Rip Curl in 2019 for $350 million from its founders, Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick. People close to several bidders, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Financial Review that KMD was chasing more than $200 million for Rip Curl alone or roughly double KMD’s current market value.
Earlier this year, The Financial Review reported that Mountain Warehouse, the British outdoor retailer owned by the billionaire Mark Neale, was interested in KMD’s Kathmandu chain. Separately, a group of former Billabong executives had proposed spinning off Rip Curl and merging it with their own company, Stokehouse.
Now, if Bluestar gets the keys, the way it works is “our team of experts embark on a complete and thorough understanding of the brand’s potential channels of distribution and price point strategies. We create tools such as brand development profiles, trend guides, style guides and marketing strategies. These marketing materials portray graphic illustrations and a strategic marketing road map to enhance consumer brand recognition.”
In layman’s terms, throw a logo on anything that moves, inflatable pool toys, beard oil, whatever dumb stuff people will buy ’cause it has a heritage banner on it.

Fanning and Gilmore must be getting nervous?
My last Rip Curl see-through in the shoulders after less than a year. The service dept. declined to repair or replace it under warranty. Never again.
Damn. No mention of Rivvia. Pressure!
I saw this Rip Curl news on an aussie media space today and the (very few) comments were about keeping aussie legacy brands in aussie hands.
But correct me if I’m wrong that half a dozen other much smaller companies have already replaced what Rip Curl used to be. Basic, but high quality wetsuits and surf gear. I’m not talking about the budget stuff from China that some here like so much. I’m talking aussie companies, even if they manufacture overseas.
I mean, Rip Curl could totally disappear tomorrow and nobody would really miss it too much, right?
the report I saw was complaining that wetsuits are only sold in June and that sales are pretty low every other month. No idea if that’s accurate or a bit of an exaggeration by BlueStar looking to get a lower price on their purchase of Katmandu.
Do core surfers now buy brands like needessentials way more then RC?
Sorry Jules! Rivvia v good yes.
Big fan of Uniqlo and Gramicci personally
I bought some Uniqlo plain black tees, on special at $9AUD each from OZbargain and they lasted for years.
Kmart has the same shit for even $5-10 bucks a shirt, and are good value, but shit quality.
As soon as you ad logos and prints, on the exact same shirts, the price goes into the $20+ even at Kmart
I guess they are using printer ink. HAHA
Fuckn joke.
Multi conglomerate Corperations . The new face of Satan.
This is the future for all us wage slaves. But the rich will buy smaller, niche brands because they will have endless money.
Thrift shops for those who don’t care about what other people think. $300 winter jackets for $50 on the rack, etc.
i just watched a Rose Anvil video looking at a 100% made in USA sneaker / skate shoe by (the Rogan-adjacent SEAL fella) Jocko’s company, Origin. I can imagine if I was a wealthy, patriotic ‘merican that I happily pay the $200 for those types of shoes instead of $80 or $100 for similar style made in china/vietnam/etc
Barnycle… Do you think it is gonna come to a point, where normal people have had enough, and no matter what the inevitable will happen?

I think people are getting sick of shit….
We are the Zombies
I’m not sure. We can go the French Revolution route where we string them up in the town square. Bathe in their blood. Eat their livers.
Or we may actually never get the chance to revolt. Seems that an extreme amount of humanity is caught in their trap of consumerism and kardasianism and will sleepwalk into obscurity. A prison of our minds.
Loads of BS and lies
Or just quit surfing…
Why quit? It’s a blast!
Age is no barrier these days
Inspiring!
For sure. No shame I reckon if you are decrepit.
Finals days is ON!

What wetsuits do you buy, DR?
If I gave you $300-$400 which one would you go out and get?
I just bought, with only a slight discount, the Hayden 3mm short sleeved steamer for me and my two boys, holy grail for all around warm-ish water suit … https://au.haydenshapes.com/collections/wetsuits/products/hs-dion-lee-mens-ss-fullsuit-chestzip-3-2mm
and for deep winter the O’Neill stitchless steamer
https://au.oneill.com/products/mens-hyperx-32mm-stitchless-steamer-chest-zip-black-wst6c7ma-002?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24261479179&gbraid=0AAAAADfb028DyvgBW3tJxSlh0d8WEzo2P&gclid=CjwKCAiAhqHXBhAXEiwATbksU1BF4_iDyBNCimfvO7zhHWnmSSV28aiQyWPJGlMj5WCv9zSxybf5WxoCV9gQAvD_BwE.
Nice. Thanks for the reply.
Good for Hayden getting into wetsuits, as he cares about design so much.
I’ve no idea why I still respect O’Neill so much, especially as i probably wouldn’t have too much in common with the folks over at La Jolla Group (in La Jolla) who have the licensing deal over in the US. (O’Neill family still owns the wetsuits).
There’s an outlet store in Weston, FL that has a permanent 50-70% off sale and i get any and all clothes suited to living in the tropics for cheaper than any other brand. As in, they’re the least expensive prices in the entire outlet mall, along with the Quik stuff that’s all the same price. Crazy prices.
Also, had a laugh the other day when I stopped in a countryside bar on my way back from the beach, for some local street food and a beer, and the old fella behind the bar got a huge smile when he saw my t-shirt. He said to look at the sign above the entrance to the bar where the proprietor’s name is in display and his name was O’neil. Those Irish sure got around ….and fully mixed in with the local population.
Buy Colby +, super good suits at a good price. All black, no logos. He used to own the needessentials license for US but moved on to his own brand.
Thanks. Luckily I don’t have to buy wetsuits. I’ll probably continue to buy 2mm tops as long as I surf, as I get cold easily, but will likely never surf cold water again. If I ever do, it will be for a short time and I’ll buy whatever is cheapest (second hand).
all black, no logos is my style and that’s the exact O’Neill boardies I picked up last time I was in their store. $18+tax. Got 2 or 3 of them.
mo betta logo than Che…arhhhhhgg.
