“How much bigger can the elephant in the room get?”
They don’t make triathlons any bigger than the ol Noosa one, eight and a half thou’ low body fat mad dogs swinging through the gorgeous coastal town famous for an astonishing sub-tropical beauty and waves that can still make a jaded fool smile as if Christmas morn.
And while Noosa’s importance to the modern-day shredder has diminished a little, although the last time I flew up there to chase a cyclone swell I was sharing the green-walled waves with Julian Wilson and Wade Goodall, it remains a natural treasure.
Surfing at Ti Tree Bay,” the shaper Bob McTavish once said, “is like having a cup of tea with God.
Re: the Noosa triathlon, there’s a 1.5km swim along pretty Main Beach, a 40km bike ride through the splendour of Noosa’s hinterland and then a 10 click run through town. It’s the biggest Olympic-distance triathlon in the world and Australia’s most prestigious one.
Wait a sec, scratch the swim.
For the first time in its 43-year history, was cancelled yesterday thereby turning the triathlon into a biathlon after fleets of sharks were spotted and lifesavers said hell naw, we ain’t going out there.
The triathlon’s Head of ops Rebecca Van Pooss said, “In the circumstances we had this morning, lifesavers wouldn’t put those people out on the water, which is totally understandable. So, based on that decision, we made our decision that we also can’t put athletes in the water.”
Now, over at Joel Nancarrow’s Facebook page, and we sure do like Joel Nancarrow around these parts ’cause he ain’t afraid to call a spade a spade, as they say, he writes: “How much bigger can the elephant in the room get????? This is the first time ever this event has been cancelled due to sharks!!!!! And before the “more drones, more sightings” crowd pipe up, helicopters have been around for a few years or more now and somehow, it’s never happened before. Could it just possibly be that just maybe, there are more sharks????? This is going to be the new normal, looking forward to hearing the excuses on the news channels from the wildlife warriors about this one!!!!!!”
One competitor chimed in, “I raced there today and the life guard said they spotted over 20 sharks this morning. Including 2.5m+ bulls.”
Interesting, although predictable, back and forthing in the comments with one reader positing, “The actual real elephant in the room is ‘overpopulation of humans.'”

What’s worse, sharks or crocs. This has been the classic, desperado typhoon overcall. It always looked suss. Another, swillnut, calhoun style, subscribe early, gimme gimme, dollar peso exchange prayer. Miles away, tight zone, north sprinter, early snow, quickly obliterated. Toledo’s dream scenario. Except, pipe here I…
I never listen to the boys re surf, its a running joke. Its always pumping peso’s! Plus long time fisherman regularly dissappear. I’ve had hilarious, to white squall horror story boating experiences.
Good write up secret agent free/longy/tom tom. Yep, some huge divides happening, and yep, tons of locals are poorer than ever. No land, no food, no boats, no electricity, no water, no nothing. Forced to pay endless ‘mabuhay’ fees, even for the funeral. However, in the provinces, there’s even issues now where somehow, cemeteries are becoming ‘resorts’. If you were here long ago, you would never have believed that could ever possibly happen. But then, who would have ever believed fucking medewi would become a coveted, luxury resort ‘surf’ destination. Behind the scenes, obesity rules! Croc food, and the parasites finish the job.
Still though, even in oz, plenty of long ago discovered, fully scoped, checked out, long ago, rightly so, abandoned, absolute dud, shit wave regions, even get palmed off these days, spruiked as stunning scenarios of magnificence, worthy of keyboard missions!
Whoa!
Breaking News!
Kevin Davidson named Cloud 9 everyone!
IT’S ON in 10. 1st heat of the day…Lion against the Lamb
correction—Cowardly Lion against the Scarecrow
went to Noosa about 15 years ago and the tri was on. What an absolute shit fight !
I mean it’s a shit fight anyway but with roads closed etc … Fark
Can only have got worse
BREAKING NEWS: the presence of Lewis Hamilton’s Mexican girlfriend is thought to have distracted him, following his second place finish at the Mexican GP despite starting on pole position.
Before hand it was whispered, throughout the paddock, that he was fueled by zionist tears and kelly slater inspirational quotes, but these catalysts have proven to be inadequate. Hamilton was thought to be angry with his teammate the monagasque Charles Le Clerc, the zionist surf media, money-loving Max Vertsappen and the entire non-woke world.
In lesser news, 20 year old Italian Kimi Antonelli becomes the youngest ever Formula 1 world champ, in just his second ever season; driving for potentially zionist mercedes benz auto racing. While the german manufacturer, mercedes benz, has not explicitly stated their opinion their past behaviour may indicate they prefer that the chosen people reside in “the promised land”, even at the expense of the current residents.
Catching up on contest via video replay and wondering where all the water camera angles were … and then realized, oh yeah , no water photogs
there were water photogs at Cloud 9 yesterday
Was there? Remember thinking some into the tube shots would be cool. Saw drone footage and some from on the reef.
JSC patented Cloud 9, so no other photographers are allowed to shoot there due to IP violation.
bahahahaahhaah
Looks like Barron Mamiya is shredding up Sunset. Wish it was aired live and we had comments, so many good surfers in that competition.
I watched it from the parking lot for awhile. Some really big ones coming through.
Still some fun waves in town.
How come all the country farmers are vex at Cheeto, Mike?
Are they stoopid?
He turned down a Cloud9 spot to stay in Hawaii and focus on the 1.5 points for pipe.
Just checked his scores across the event. Dude is killing it, every heat all 8-9+ point rides.
didn’t Noosa put a population cap on the shire?
???
A cap on humans, sharks or something else?
Yeah, only they capped the amount of people who aren’t old, rich and white. Cunnnavajoint.
It’s nice country, Jackie, if you can pull it off.
