New documentary follows surfer Harry Bryant’s transition to “woman in her fifties”

"A lot of the American folks are shocked at the Australian way of life."

If you didn’t know, Harry Bryant is an almost thirty-year-old male Australian surfer with a blunt-cut hairdo who is often mistaken for a woman in her fifties despite an albino moustache that twinkles like glitter on a burlesque dancer’s corset.

Harry Bryant first appeared on the radar of BeachGrit almost one decade ago when he good-naturedly choked an overzealous security guard at Stab’s inaugural aerial event at Waco in Texas.

“All I remember was seeing Chip getting head-locked by that security guard,” Harry Bryant told BeachGrit. “He (Chippa) was sitting down talking to someone, there was some debacle, and then Chippa was in a headlock. My instant reaction was to put him in one and then, before I knew it, I was in one.

“It was a trilogy of headlocks. No one was hot-headed or wanted to fight. It was all in good spirits. It was hilarious. I think a lot of the American folks were shocked at the Australian way of life. We were all having so much fun, everyone was one the beers all day, and the Americans were a bit eye-opened by that.

“Me and Jay and all those boys were having a slap contest, slapping each other in the face, stuff that you do when you’re an Australian. You’re not fighting your mates. It was blown out of proportion. People thought I was going to jail. I had a smile on my face the whole time.”

Harry Bryant also said that America can be a troublesome place for an Australian.

“You can get into a lot more trouble for little things. Even just walking down the street in the evenings and needing to do a piss, you have to go to a public toilet. But there’s no public toilets ’cause all the bums sleep in them. Even drinking a beer in the passenger seat in a car you can get in trouble for.

“In Australia it’s a way of life. People coming home from work will stop at the bottle-o and buy a long neck for the drive home. It’s so natural in Australia. Of course, you have to respect the rules in other countries but when you’re not aware of the rules, you can run into a lot of trouble.”

HARRY BRYANT’S NEW FILM IS “FEISTY”

Harry Byrant’s new film, Roasted, which isn’t a documentary about him transitioning into womanhood, if you want that and one with a real kick at the end you must watch Brisick’s The Life and Death of Westerly Windina, shows little Harry flying like a hummingbird, deftly and delicately.

There is recklessness, too.

Harry Bryant’s film Roasted appeals to me because, honestly, when was the last time I surfed waves this good or with such sudden, almost masculine, movements?

Watch for his wave from Natural Selection, this righthander made lightly famous by Kelly Slater back in 2012.

Harry Bryant says it’s “one of the best waves in the world on its day. I’d love to see it in all-time conditions. It’s definitely prone to swell but when you’re prone to swell you’re prone to all the elements. I saw the Florence lads went there a couple months prior and it looked similar: super windy, too big, real ledgy, deep water, super hard to surf. It’s really hard to navigate, to know what to  ride.

“I haven’t been to many waves like that. You can’t compare it. Teahupoo is the closest thing. It’s so ledgy. It comes out of deep water and this is a similar takeoff to Chopes but you’re locking into a kilometre of a long, long stretch of reef. On a perfect say, offshore winds, good swell direction, you could easily get the longest tube of your life.”

Dylan Graves chooses Skuxx Life in wild, cold-water surf trip through Dunedin, New Zealand

“Like a sheep trapped in a maze designed by wolves.”

I believe in purity and goodness and there’s something about Dylan Graves’ total beauty, the restless and lonely independence of manner, the proud serenity in the way he moves, that make a man fall in love over and over and over again.

Although Dylan Graves is of middle age, he’s no fat, shiny, liver-coloured man, but an example of who we can be if we don’t fall into the trap of remaining in our velvet cages of couch, device, home.

The adventures of Puerto Rican Dylan Graves in his pursuit of the strangest waves on earth have been assiduously documented on BeachGrit, a website that may be counted as Graves’ biggest fan, first in his ongoing series Weird Waves and, now, as he traverses the world solo.

Click herehereherehere and here.

And here.

Here.

Here, too.

And, here, where it all began

In his latest instalment, Dylan Graves travels to the New Zealand city of Dunedin, a wild, windswept, cold-as-hell Scottish-Maori metropolis that stretches from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the Otago hinterland.

Dylan Graves immerses himself within the local surfing community, surfs as many different waves as he can during his stay and lionises the local surfers with the best clips of their lives.

“Definitely as core as it gets, here,” says Dylan Graves. “All the locals willing to do the mahi as many times as it takes to get the treats. And you can’t help but be all in on that vibe when you’re here. Yes, it might be cold. You might have to drive far, sea lions may confront you, penguins may be elusive, but you have screensaver views everywhere, and a good crew of people, all pushing each other, trying to be the best version of themselves, in or out of the water. Rain, shine or sea lions, this crew is on it. Gloves optional.”

DIY: I Built an Off-the-Grid Wave Pool in my Own Backyard

"Someone just brought the dream backyard to reality."

Not all wave pools gotta cost fifty or a hundred mill, take years to finance, plan and build, eat up power and water, spend a significant time getting fixed and sting customers a couple of c-notes for an hour of fun.

In the Arizona desert, a trio of pals have combined skills and resources to build a wave pool, called The Wave Source, that disrupts, the paradigm that tanks are for the monied only.

Ben Gravy, a high-end intermediate surfer and novelty wave maestro from New Jersey whose pivot from drinking to daily vlogging saved him from a life as a drunk has revealed a little wave pool that took four months to build, is made from off-the-shelf nuke reactor parts and rarely breaks down.

Gravy writes,

About a month ago I received a random dm about visiting a wave pool that was built in a guys backyard. The pictures weren’t very impressive & I had no way of telling how big the waves were, but as the novelty guy of course I agreed to visit. When I arrived in Arizona & got to experience the first set my perspective changed immediately. It was a massive layout with 3-4ft perfect waves pumping through on command. I’m honored to tell Tony, Ash & Justin’s, amazing wave pool story today, through my platform.

I Built a Massive Wave Pool in my Own Backyard

The goal, says one of the three in the video, either Tony, Ash or Justin – who knows! – them whites all look the same etc, was to create a pool quickly, cheaply and make it available to all surfers and not just the monied few.

The founders say the joint uses two-thirds less power, rarely breaks down and if it does, they can swing on down the road into town to buy whatever part is busted.

Blair Conklin, a deadly sweet skim and softboard clown, got himself a piece. At one point he uses the winch tow-method popularised by my ol pal Sam Mac back in KL in 2004.

How To Make a Backyard Wavepool!

Yeah, it ain’t Slater Abu Dhabi or Slater Lemoore or even Wavegarden Tullamarine, but don’t tell you can’t see y’self frolicking in these little wedges.

Surf fans react to Gabriel Medina feeding Kelly Slater “the strawberry of love”

Medina teases, "Does Kelly Slater deserve the strawberry of love?"

In one of the lighter moments featuring Gabriel Medina and Kelly Slater, the Brazilian has thrilled surf fans by feeding the greatest surfer of all time a Morango do Amor, or Strawberry of Love, a delightful Brazilian treat t

hat captures the essence of the country’s vibrant dessert culture.

The Strawberry of Love is and indulgent candy that features fresh strawberries enveloped in a creamy white brigadeiro—a traditional Brazilian confection made from condensed milk, butter, and white chocolate.

Have you ever tried a Strawberry of Love? The brigadeiro’s velvety texture contrasts beautifully with the fruit’s tartness. Each strawberry is then coated in a crunchy sugar shell, adding a crispness that elevates the experience. The combination of creamy, crispy, and fruity elements makes it thoroughly and irresistibly delicious.

Medina, who is thirty-one and currently off the tour due to a busted titty, feeds the almost-sixty year old Slater the Strawberry of Love who worried that Medina might be trying to drug him.

The pair then enjoy a surf session at the private wave pool, Beyond the Club Sao Paulo, Medina is repping and which is described by Wavegarden as “the world’s largest and most powerful surf park, a Wavegarden Cove with 62 modules, spanning 27,000 m2.”

Essential.

Mikey February delivers latest riposte to the New Yorker’s claim his style is “as self-conscious as the duck-face selfie.”

“His hand jive, soul arches, and toreador-like flourishes play to the camera in a way that breaks the spell…"

(Editor’s note: Five years ago, The New Yorker ran a very good, and uncharacteristically raw, story by Jamie Brisick called, “Surfing in the Age of the Omnipresent Camera”, which described Mikey February’s surfing thus, “His hand jive, soul arches, and toreador-like flourishes play to the camera in a way that breaks the spell of the itinerant surfer in far-flung solitude. His style is as self-conscious as the duck-face selfie.”)

The most talked-about surfer not on the world tour, Mikey February, has delivered his latest riposte to that ol New Yorker story byBeachGrit’s favourite son Jamie Brisick

that his surfing is the visual manifestation of an outsized ego etc.

When you see Mikey February you’ll understand that he’s a beautiful man in every sense. He has a beautiful heart, beautiful courage, a beautiful intelligence. For me, everything about him is beautiful, his smile, his expression, his face. And you should see him when he wears his hair short! He looks like a boy! But he’s no boy, he’s as real man etc.

In this video, Mike February, along with guy pals Dylan Graves (video coming soon!) and Aritz Aranburu, do the strike mission thing, chasing fairytales as it is, to snatch a few brief moments with that well-known, among secret wave aficionados, sandbottom righthander. More cock than rock, as it were.

The movements are scored to the Prince piano track from 1983 called 17 Days (piano and microphone), an old demo recorded at his Kiowa Trail home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and discovered after the fruity lil pill-popping maetro died. The song explores heartbreak and longing, with lyrics about a lover gone for “17 days and 17 long nights.”

Beautiful and sad and wonderful.

Essential.
