Purps it forward.
Living in the future is, at times, surreal. FedEx electric delivery trucks driving around looking straight out of Hill Valley circa 2015, Singapore-based digital asset managers sponsoring the U.S. Open of Surfing, sitting in Delta Premium Select, sipping Grey Goose + Soda, half-watching Taika Waititi’s Boy while scrolling Instagram DMs while opening one reading “Purps is still around?” while spitting Grey Goose + Soda on Taika Waititi’s Boy out of shock.
Who knew?
The Kelly Slater + RVCA boss Pat Tenore + mysterious “Dr. Purps” energy drink came online around the same time as your favorite “shocking content” surf website BeachGrit. I remember Derek Rielly ordering a whole case for me in those heady early years. If I recall, I was supposed to take cans to scientists and test if the super-berry beverage actually provided any secret energy, as claimed, other than just a sugar spike.
It stayed in my garage until one of the cans burst and I threw it all away.
In any case, I assumed it all went out of business some five years ago. I have never once seen anyone drinking a Purps. I have never once seen it in a store.
But here it is with an origin story reading:
It’s simple; we started Purps because we wanted to develop premium nutrition products that are better choices for our daily routine, with the greater mission of inspiring and educating our youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle with the Purps It Forward organization.
The Purps Founders are world-class innovators, with a commonality as advocates for health in their own lives and for others. The Founders are passionate about the Purps mission. Purps products are designed with a purpose using premium ingredients, with no artificial colors, no artificial flavors and no preservatives. Purps advocates are committed to inspiring and educating our youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle with the Purps It Forward organization.
And available at a 7-11 on 204 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa, Ca 92627 USA
Purps it forward?
Ranking Kelly Slater’s many business ventures, from K-Grips to Endorfins to magical turtle moon sandals, where do you think Purps ranks in terms of success?
Also, have you watched Boy?
It’s good.

There’s that thing that happens to people who’ve plie’d in the spotlight for a time. When the world moves on and doesn’t care to shower them with praise or deliver that feedback that assures them of their continued undeniable greatness. When the things they touch no longer turn to gold. That moment when their ego realizes there is only one answer to this insulting decline… When they understand without a doubt that their are forces acting against their greatness, trying to silence them by not catching their 10,000 stage dive and appropriately holding them above the rest. The pain of not having their unsolicited advice (on any random subject) held up as gospel must be unbearable. The only valid response is to air these grievances and unveil these conspiracies against them on Joe Rogan or OAN, then sign a deal with a right wing media outlet that understands their continued greatness and can go to war with anyone that tries to deny it through violent acts of not being interested in their products or caring to listen to them anymore.
Boy is the best movie ever. The Dad rules so hard!
Bloody egg!
It is really amazing looking at the careers of one Kelly Slater and one Tony Hawk how they paralleled each other if not overlapped each other in both fringe action sports… Kelly’s net worth probably in the range of 30 million Hawk’s probably 4-5 times that probably sitting at 150 million… Maybe it just boils down to personality type How Kelly would lend his name to almost anything as opposed to a little how one might say judgement (Baywatch anyone) … Or maybe it comes down to the people that would filter some of these projects out for Kelly would essentially be over ruled by Kelly cause Kelly Knows better than anyone on every subject… His failed business ventures alone makes for an interesting Documentary…
Congrats Mr. Smith and as you CREEP toward infamy may the depth of your daily “Stories” be a legacy connected to the unmatched NY TIMES Bestseller rogue writes you assume.
Scored a second hand Tomo off gumtree, has kgrip, both are holding up well…
Nuthin compares to Purps
Maybe ELo can help turn Purps around too
Reach around?
Public carriers,…good show
Damn Charles you’re on a bit of a roll here with all you’re investigative surf journalism-ing!
Anything that needs to label itself as ‘premium’ is usually shit. Same goes for the ridiculous entrepreneur spin – inspiring and educating youth, Founders who are passionate about the mission and are world class innovators. Burp it forward.
Fucks sake its a can of soda pop.
Marketing these days has can nuclear on nauseating.
At what point does beachgrit become Kelly Slater? Its mostly the low hanging fruit at this point. Energy drinks (rightly so, white pointers, brasilian passion unrewarded, kelly slater and eventually Id assume you will go after catholisism).
at least go after pedos!!!
What have you got against pedalos?
You cynical bastard. https://uploads.disquscdn.c… https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Maybe they would have been successful if they donated a portion of profits to some environmental cause (tax write off) or just added a shit ton of caffeine and sugar
Haven’t watched Boy but we did enjoy Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Ya, my kids loved too
“He made me play with myself, and wouldn’t join in!”
“You’re a big fella! Who ate the guy who ate all the pies, eh?”
Apparently they sell them at Seaside Market….maybe you and Rob can do a taste test together
Any asshole that goes to Seaside Market and buys Purps instead of Cardiff Crack deserves a good old fashioned country ass whoopin!
Not Boy …. but What We Do In The Shadows is pure genius.
like doing an ironman or a tough mudder … test yourself against the elements by foregoing the fancy class. Did DC to Istanbul in the middle (middle) seat of a Turkish Air Airbus a few years ago not long before COVID. Walking off the plane after that route gives you a sense of invincibility, like you can endure anything else the world throws at you.
Oh it wasn’t a flex at all… I’ve done Emirates biz once and enjoyed thoroughly, though.
North Shore Foodland in front of Sharks Cove sells the purple nectar. It’s a great treat to have folks from Los Angeles litter them around Pupakea.
Those grey K Grips looked beautiful on his old Al Merricks.
Current day at the Firewire factory. Word has it that when the 5 year old Taiwanese children go over the boards for the last sand they like to rub the board one more time with there greasy hands before handing the board to there master. The glass tingle on there palms makes them feel alive.
I love the smell of landfill in the morning.
