Surfers lose last shred of “bad boy cred” after Olympic snowboarder fingered as mastermind behind cocaine ring

"He chose to become a major drug trafficker, and he chose to become a killer."

There was once a time when surfing, and its surfers, were outlaws. Living on the fringes of society, man. Rejecting buttoned-up culture and “jobs” and “making a decent living” or an “honest one.” Surfers did whatever they could to keep living the derelict dream which often included trafficking cocaine and sometimes abusing it or haven’t you seen the surf masterpiece Sea of Darkness?

Sea of Darkness Trailer

In any case, time moved on, surfing itself became “monetized” and Erik Logan. Still, sometimes after the sun sets, surfers gather in dusky beach-adjacent parking lots, drink beer straight out of the can and reminisce about the naughty noughties and being bad boys.

Well, all that is officially lost with the revelation that a Canadian Olympic snowboarder has been running a murderous cocaine trafficking ring that stretched all through the Americas. The FBI declared it is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of one Ryan James Wedding who, they say, is living in Mexico.

Wedding, 43, popped on the extreme scene by competing for the maple leaf at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympiad where he finished 24th in parallel giant slalom. From there, it was straight on to the delinquent life. Authorities say he organized long-haul semi-trucks to ferry the product from Colombia up to the Great White North. As things happen with cartels and whatnots, Wedding is also being charged with murder.

In speaking about the case, Martin Estrada, U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, stated, “He chose to become a major drug trafficker, and he chose to become a killer.

Erik Logan, in the meantime, chose to become a #Lifeforcepartner.

You can still find the Martin edit here and there, but its pretty shitty compared to the original, which is forever gone. Quick summary of the edited version for ya: Martin good, everyone else bad (especially Boyum).

Pretty sure OG is 2008, 2013 is the version MD edited.

It has a stamp at the bottom identifying as belonging to a production company. I have a copy but it’s nothing like the OG version. All incriminating shit about Martin has been removed.

The YouTube I saw was definitely stamped. The next day it said it was gone due to copyright infringement on Martin. I was confused, but now it makes sense.

Martin owns the rights to both versions so it was probably an infringement reported by him not on him.

Not sure, I’ll have to bring it up at home and check. If there is a stamp at the bottom it’s the edited one. If there’s no stamp send me a copy please.

No stamp visible in photo (front cover image only). Too much of a gamble, since the dvd is US$55. More research is in order. The original must be the longer version.

The original is gone, you can’t find it or see it unless you somehow got a copy from Oblowitz. The edited version is the one you can find here and there. Easy to tell, its stamped at the bottom with the name of Martin’s company but I can’t remember the name at the moment.

Possibly the bit where he steals a LOT of cash from the Maui boys.
And then dies not long after…

Plus the Ricky Raz thing in NY (apparently it was Boyums coke).
And lots of other dodgy shit that other people got busted for, and/or ripped off.

Daly is on heaps of it talking about how he was living on the boat with a band of pirates doing ‘salvage’ of rare artifacts and could’ve become a smuggler with his mates but chose never to do it.
Though some people reckon he’s bullshitting and did some runs before giving up.
His mate Chitty is an unexpected star of the show, ever the fall guy, but not afraid to talk of their constant conquest for ‘tonnage’ of whatever type of thing they were moving at the time.
Tonnage, it’s all about the tonnage…

Barrelled

That’s from the version Martin edited. It was originally about obtaining a boat that had “60 feet on the waterline” in order to be able to haul tonnage of black, it was all about black (not coke, not weed), black tar heroin. The Rader is/was 63′ with 60′ on the waterline. The original movie version had plenty references by those involved to Martin being involved in the smuggling operations. After it showed at and won a few film festivals, Martin realized that he and his cronies would either have to leave Indo forever or risk going to jail forever. Soooo, Martin shelled out somewhere around $500,000 plus to buy the rights to the movie. That allowed him the ability to squash the true version and stories about him so it would never be seen by the Indo authorities. In a failed attempt to re-coup his “investment”, Martin edited the movie to make it look like everything nefarious was done by Mike Boyum (blame the dead guy) and Martin chose the honest path that he is on now. Total bullshit. That way Martin and his boys could stay in Indo and reap the benefits of what they did and what they discovered. This went deep into the surf industry at the time. How do you think they got the money to start some of those big clothing companies? Anyway, you will never see the real version made by Oblowitz, NEVER.

Yeah
Exactly
That’s what I said but without the long-winded bits everyone already knows.

P.S.
‘Black’ refers to Nepalese hashish actually, not smack.
Black tar is from Mexico and the America’s.
Asian heroin is more refined and pale, sometimes even white…

“In any case, time moved on, surfing itself became “monetized” and Erik Logan.”

Are either of those sentences (if that’s what they are) supposed to make sense? And Sea of Darkness sure as hell ain’t about cocaine, it’s about running black, aka heroin.
