"Economically, this nearly triples revenue generation from the surf lagoon alone while benefiting other surrounding business units."
The highly anticipated wave pool war, foretold by our ancestors, seems to be over before it truly began. But lo, rewind your memory to 2010. It was the year the iPad was introduced, WikiLeaks published its first Chelsea Manning drips, a JetBlue employee dramatically quit by sliding down the plane’s escape slide and Wavegarden unveiled its surf tub, Mick Fanning, Gabriel Medina, “making folklore by surfing the artificial knee-high waves.”
Fast forward five years and “greatest athlete ever” Kelly Slater revealed his very own technology up Lemoore, California way. It was an absolute arms’ race, new and different tanks featuring new and different wave generating mechanisms popping up in Austin, Texas, Waco, Texas and Yeppoon, Australia.
There were plows, gas chambers, mechanical trains and rusty plungers but which of them would conquer all?
Which would become the de facto “Wave Pool.”
Well, a decade on, the original seems to have so thoroughly smashed its opponents that “Wavegarden” is now shorthand for surf tub.
Amusement Today reveals, in a stunning new report, that, “Wavegarden is currently the company with the most operational surf parks worldwide. To date, it has nine facilities across four continents that have attracted over 2 million visitors and generated more than 35 million waves. Additionally, 10 projects are currently under construction, set to open between 2025 and 2026, with another 50 projects in development.”
Furthermore, “With an internal rate of return (IRR) over 20%, each facility has proven profitable. This success has inspired several clients to open additional facilities and consolidate their growth.”
And, “Wavegarden Cove is the most efficient and sustainable wave generator on the market, consuming only 0.3 to 1.0 kWh per wave, depending on its size and power – 10 times less than equivalent pneumatic systems. This energy efficiency can save between $2 million and $3 million USD annually. Furthermore, thanks to its low energy consumption, it is the only surf lagoon technology capable of being fully powered by solar energy produced on-site.”
Plus, “With a capacity of over 90 surfers simultaneously in the lagoon, our surfer capacity to lagoon size ratio is up to 4 times more than other surfing lagoons. Economically, this nearly triples revenue generation from the surf lagoon alone while benefiting other surrounding business units such as hospitality, accommodation, surf schools, and retail shops.”
In a word, or four, peace in our time.
Do you have thoughts on Wavegarden’s dominance or are you too worried about Tyler Wright’s wellbeing to care?

covid rules may apply: 6 foot distancing.
I’m calling bullshit on those numbers.
I’m shocked they have 1mm subs..
I can’t remember if the pro’s claim waves in a pool or not. Probably should be illegal.
“90 surfers simultaneously in the lagoon” approaching snapper numbers per square meter?
Watched a few waves from the pool on YouTube to shore up my surfvival pick and I can say with certainty this event is going to be boring as fuck.
Chas you care way to much that TW is a lesbian, are you “ok”.

Really easy to #BoycottTheSlavepool with that time zone
Shark numbers will seal the deal
wave pools are the new ice rinks/bowling alleys
Thats about as far from reality as you can get.The pools are way better than the beach, on average.
You will be stoked. Guaranteed
Preach!
AI: ” I crunched the numbers in a fraction of a second. I have concluded natural waves are the most cost effective, and most profitable. You’re welcome. Now I’m off to figure out where more fraud and waste is.”
the #s are staggerin’…
Try Luxembourg above !!!
Why aren’t we talking about Medina’s take on Pipe final score brake down??
I’m going to go and read it. We care about his surfing because he’s an all-time ripper. But I don’t think that we need to care about his opinion about anything beyond the borders of Brazil.
Edit: he said that Leo was underscored on both of his waves, and that the 9.8 was a correct score.
Where did Gabe spit that out??
Presumably on instagram. The inertia article was the first hit on my Bing search. Stopped using Google a few months ago when their search algo stopped giving me proper results.
I tapped out in 2016…at the height of the insanity during the election when I typed in ‘crooked’, stream was #1 while every other search engine on the internet machine came up with Hilary. Unreal
To be clear. You think that, at that particular moment in time, the top answer for googling the word “crooked” should have been Hilary Clinton?
For clarity, I had read it somewhere and tried yahoo and bing and Hilary was first suggestion. But on google she wasn’t anywhere. I’m sure you find this shocking
read dat too. sensible, yes?
How about an informal poll… would you rather watch twenty minutes of Clay Marzo(upvote) or a WCT contest (downvote)?
WCT event with Clay as wildcard
I don’t downvote but would take Marzo all day over 20 mins of a WCT.
It depends on what clay marzo is doing?
going left
Ok then – clay it is
Clays Like 47 now.
Close, but 46 + 2 actually.
Xox
Relatively young in the natural clay formation process then…

Has anyone tried both a Wavegarden pool and the Waco type pool (AWM tech)?
Wave garden tech coming mere blocks from The Llama Compound.. Father of BG’s “Child Pirate” or AKA “All Day Rob” has tasted Waco and will be a fully vetted club member at new facility. Will get a report as soon as kicks out of his first session!
VB??
Do I have to answer tHAT..
jetty dreamers for the win
Maybe in the mid 80’s when I was a grom and it really was dominated by the short board revolution. Grew up with a father that surfs, had me at nineteen and was told. “When you are sixteen you can drive south!” The day after receiving license got up at dawn made the trip in a maroon Honda hatchback CVCC with aloha racks. I came home late my mother was completely freaked out, had know idea where I’d gone. Looked over to him between her breaths of worry and anger. You always told me.. Burned up at least one cassette deck with talking heads, rush, exodus, steel pulse. Had a square box with antenna next to my bed! The guys from here who make that trip on regular are super committed. Know a few guys whom have put thousands of hours in a car. Once ran into may dad at the Red Drum, and he handed me a twenty so I could stay an extra day or so camping or sleeping in that car. Been known to wipe my ass with your sock in the dunes if you are riding with me, switch to another friends car if ridding with you and you wan’t to leave good surf and go home early. Finally I surfed twice in a day last week 44 degree water and it was not “jetty dreamers.” Unfortunately I did not get in my car for the two an a half hour trip. Walked a couple blocks and surfed with one other guy out!
surfed lighthouse and vb both for first time in early 90s, over the years racked up some hrs in multiple locations over that stretch, won’t name them but you would know. Never really considered myself a local anywhere along there though bc already in my 20s and beyond when first paddled out in that region. Haven’t been out on east coast much in a while, did do a quick session for hurricane Fiona a couple years ago bc happened to be visiting at the same time. But now that getting older the paddle outs on the obx are a drag, especially in full neoprene, takes a special mindset to keep it going in those conditions. And kudos for getting out there in the 44 degree zone, have a 5/4 and 7mm booties gathering dust, can’t say I’m missing those days
4/3 dry lock with hood. maybe 5mm boots and thin gloves.. Hour and half tops. When low pressure comes under OBX and storms all night. South swell and SW winds typically help keep air temp manageable. Can’t move in a 5/4 and get to my feet so good. Opt for thinner suit, shorter session, and exhale on duck dives to keep cold off my face! It’s been awhile since I have taken on deep winter lighthouse at size. Last time got so smoked came up seeing stars and puked. On the drive home considered switching to a boogie to make the drop. Went as far as bought xl fins on sale that year try stay in that game! Nowadays BJJ keeps me fit, weight down, and head on straight. With that said the past 8 years I have eaten more than my share of humble pie. Have a family member with severe mental health issues, breast cancer, yada yada yada in the game of life! Don’t know if I believe in god anymore. Believe in doing my best to be a better husband ,father, son, friend, good work and lastly “my kindness is not a weakness” and surfing not as important. I really enjoyed it last week.
https://uploads.disquscdn.c… with you on all of that. Also, first and last time will ever share a surf pic on here, but figured this would look familiar to you ((few years back):

What are the latest #s on Surf-adjacent websites and their profitability?
They prefer not to publish negative numbers.
‘We estimate the website value of http://beachgrit.com is currently at $ 24,241 USD and reaches roughly 4,259 unique users each day that generate 11,069 daily pageviews with a daily revenue (from advertisements, i.e Google AdSense) of $ 11 USD approximately.”
