The great surfboard shaper Matt Biolos, a man I’ve spent one quarter of a century decorating with my sparkling genetic code, although Johnny Cabianca has enjoyed similar fireworks in recent years, has come under fire from a troupe of so-called First Amendment auditors on the streets of San Clemente.
First Amendment auditors on TikTok are pests who claim they film interactions with public officials, cops etc, or in public spaces to test and document whether their constitutional right to record is respected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
The game is this: provoke reactions to create viral, confrontational content by refusing to identify ’emselves or pushing boundaries to bait a response. Dramatic footage. Views. It’s more harassment than activism especially when auditors target private citizens or businesses, even though filming from public property is generally legal.
Cool mom lookalike Matt Biolos, who is fifty-five and builder of boards for the winners of both divisions of the recent Rip Curl Portugal Pro, Yago Dora, Caroline Marks, was enjoying a stroll with his family when he, reasonably, asked ‘em to stop filming him and his kids.
How about don’t film us?” Matt Biolos, reasonably asks.
“How about don’t talk to me,” says the reedy-voiced TikTok pest. “Leave me alone, sir, my personal security guard is going to get you.”
“Whaaat?” Biolos responds.
Biolos’ kids, who know a FA pest when they see one and their game, convince daddy to get the hell out of there before the sitch escalates.
The FA pests then hassle the local sheriff.
He, like Biolos, responds with a cool I’d find hard to replicate if placed in the same situation.

I had a similar experience in my late teens. Got a lost with broken nose that was spray painted by a guy who used to run with that SC derelict crew. A character. I was broke but got for like $50. It was before they had all the models so late 90’s. Those days I only had one board and if it broke I was fucked. One of the best boards I ever had. I remember it being one of those boards you have in life where you notice your surfing go up a notch. Don’t have many of those so when you do you remember. Rode it till the wheels fell off.

Strand and Carter was one small piece of that getting blown up. PH, down the street, had the same 5 years before the Strand incident. It used to happen everywhere, still happens some places but pretty rare with cameras at the ready and on poles.
I’ve just taken delivery of a handshaped clone of my magic board from ‘95. Different logo, plus a 5-fin set up instead of glassed on thrusters. So not really a clone. But hopefully close enough to go good, should my wave count allow sufficient practice.
I’m really worried the logo will cause issues.

Preferably those who were born and bred there.
Especially people who were homeschooled and/or part of the 2%ers, and/or anyone who lives in the gated part.
It’d be interesting to hear an insiders point of view on the recent bagging of their town and the associated lifestyle choices involved.
Actually also anyone who lives in a Southern California gated community, as from afar it seems completely foreign to anything else in the English speaking western world.

It certainly ain’t what it used to be.
Being adjacent to a huge military base always kinda made SC skew more conservative among OC beach towns.
