"It exemplifies performative outrage: jumping into a cause because it’s prominent, without depth or consideration for the raw grief involved."
After becoming outspoken about Muslim terrorism in the wake of the horrific terrorist mass shooting at Bondi Beach two weeks ago — which claimed 15 lives during a Hanukkah celebration — I have been attacked like never before in my life.
This has been a fascinating, if disturbing, experience.
I wondered what it was I had triggered in people, many that I know and many more that I don’t, that made them think it was okay to make so many irrational, mostly personal attacks so publicly.
But it was a Facebook direct message that I found the most striking. A message from a very well-known surfing journalist made me realise what we’re up against.
The message read: “Imagine six Bondi mass shootings a day, every day for two years.”

In my view, comparing the fresh trauma of a terrorist mass shooting at a peaceful religious gathering on a Sydney beach — in a country that has enjoyed relative peace — to an ongoing war in the Middle East feels remarkably tone-deaf and insensitive at this moment, especially so soon after the event.
Performative Outrage
To me, it exemplifies the kind of performative outrage I’ve been describing: jumping into a cause because it’s prominent, without apparent depth or consideration for the raw grief involved.
This seems to me like the poster child for the “I’m protesting the thing everyone else is protesting” meme — you know the ones: a person holding a blank sign or something generic like “I don’t know what we’re protesting but I’m here” or “I’m against whatever you’re against.”
In my opinion, this is bandwagon activism: joining trends or outrage cycles primarily because they’re popular, driven more by social pressure than by genuine understanding or care for the issue. It can look like activism from the outside, but it often lacks substance — more about the aesthetic of being on the “right” side than thoughtful engagement.
Most people remember the moment they wake up. It’s not something that’s easy to forget. I woke up one day about 10 years ago when I saw a woman on the news answering a reporter who asked her why she was protesting: “Because I’m a good person.”
The scales fell from my eyes. I heard what she was really saying, even if she didn’t quite know what an admission she was making. She didn’t answer the question, but ironically, she told the reporter what she was really doing.
She was showing everyone what side she was on: the side of goodness. It wasn’t about the issue; it was about being seen as good. There is a well-known idea that people who see themselves as “good,” or who desperately want to be seen as good, can sometimes become the most dangerous — not because they intend harm, but because they believe their actions are morally justified.
This idea appears across psychology, philosophy, and history under several related concepts.Moral self-licensing is when people view themselves as good and sometimes feel entitled to do harmful things because they believe their moral “credit” protects them. “I’m a good person, so this harsh action must be fine.”
Moral absolutism is when people who believe they are unquestionably on the “good” side may justify extreme actions because they think their cause is righteous. This is the classic “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” dynamic.
In The Banality of Evil, Hannah Arendt argued that great harm is often done not by obvious villains but by ordinary people who think they’re just doing the right or normal thing.
Virtue signaling or moral grandstanding is when someone is more invested in appearing good than being good; they may attack others publicly to prove their own virtue, escalate moral conflicts, or behave aggressively while believing they’re morally superior.
Shadow projection, in Jungian psychology, refers to people who see themselves as purely good and often project their own flaws onto others, treating those others as dangerous or evil. This describes externalising one’s own darkness through moral scapegoating, which can lead to harsh actions while believing they’re defending goodness.
The “dangerous good person” paradox refers to those who believe they are unquestionably good, and who may ignore their own capacity for harm, justify cruelty as “necessary”, refuse to self-reflect, become rigid, punitive, or self-righteous, and display a moral infallibility mindset.
Another old surf media acquaintance messaged me: “What happened to you?”
I messaged back: “If you had to guess, what do you think it might have been?”
I was tempted to ask what happened to him, but I already knew the answer; he had gone to university thinking he was training to get a job when he was really just studying to be a bad actor in the dramatic arts.

first of all you’re incorrect on the numbers killed score board.
next, stop basing your analysis of the situation on body counts.
in conclusion; this is not a religious conflict, it’s a land dispute, that religious zealots and anti-religion secularists use to fuel the flames of hatred on both sides.
You have revealed your anti-religious and anti-semitic biases in your comments, but lack of knowledge and uneducated opinions on the matter are lacking in any added value to the conversation.
You’re simply a propagandist incendiary device for your corporate manipulators.
same response I left for the Strayan. I have no dog in the hunt either, just have studied a lot of history in this region. best to know the players before deciding which team you’re on.
in the words of the prophet Frank:
“‘It should be easy to see
The crux of the biscuit is the Apostrophe'”
the Judea (Israel)/Palestine (two territories of Israel) conflict is a centuries old land dispute with frosting and sprinkles of religion on top to appease the religious zealots and anti-religion secularists.
too sum up on both sides, again from the prophet Frank:
‘You can’t say that!’
‘It doesn’t, and you can’t!
I won’t, and it don’t!
It hasn’t, it isn’t, it even ain’t
And it shouldn’t
It couldn’t!’
“He told me ‘No no no!’
I told him ‘Yes yes yes!’
I said: ‘I do it all the time;
Ain’t this boogie a mess!'”
How many days until April and the first CT contest? Fuck me. Isn’t there some real estate for sale to write about?
Hey Chaz and Dez I have a suggestion for yous both. I reckon it would be pretty fascinating to know how Beachgrit readers really feel about Netinyahoos military actions over in Gaza. How many reckon his actions were just and necessary and how many reckon his actions make him an evil cunt with the blood of thousands of innocent women and children on his hands?
There would be no comments just a running tally of votes where people just get to vote in favour or against the cunt and his actions. It would be pretty fitting cuz yous have pushed this subject on us all pretty fucking hard over the last year or so. Let me know what yous reckon
Interesting point you bring up.
if you study history, the Jews are the most persecuted people in history. the “Palestinian” issue is much more complex than our current understanding and without the history (going back to the jews being expelled from Israel (Judea) throughout history) behind the conflict as a basis, modern opinion doesn’t provide a factual interpretation of the current conflict.
I saw a very good movie last night titled Defiance. give it a watch.
Onyas Happy and I agree mate like I said in another comment this ia thousands of years war that will never get solved. However the fellas at Beachgrit have really pushed this topic and Netinyahoos military actions are what have inflamed public opinion. We have read thousands of comments for and against so lets just do the right thing and hand it over to the people and let them vote on it.
I reckon it would be fascinating cuz Beachgrit readers and commentators are made up of cunts from all over this wonderful planet, all with different cultures, religious beliefs and so on so lets put it to the vote! Imagine how exciting a live running tally would be on the opening page haha

based on your statement(s); are you saying that non-religious folk (atheists) don’t “treat another tribe of people inhumanely”, attack and kill other humans?
all I did was copy and paste your last sentence into google and what came up was the same statement on reddit. top o’ the list.
I don’t know what “numbers” you’re referring to.
please elucidate.
Why’s that?
Fuck me Cunty. This is Beachgrit. No place for investigative journalism or bohemian artsy writings. Surf gossip & bullshit. Slander & inuendo… I come here to relax…..
are you the founder, owner or editor of Beach Grit?
Yes – you have to wonder at both the futility and stupidity of the various Arab Muslim nations and non-state actors, attacking the State of Israel over and over again, when they lose every war they start – too stupid to alter their established behaviour patterns, apparently.
The message is very clear, Monty is more intelligent, more cultured, has more important friends, more educated, is way cooler and better in every way than you or me. My advice is take that carrot out of your arse Monty and as Kendrick wrote “be humble”.
I’m probably 50/50 on the content, maybe 60/40 or 70/30. I do agree with some of Montague’s points. And he always has a strong premise.
But fmd, that wounded, self-pitying, condescending tone is just so damn……unattractive…. from a grown man and supposed journalist.
As a polemicist it’s kind of embarrassing how poorly he prosecutes his argument and how unaware he is of how badly his points land. He seems completely clueless that when he presents contested points as fact others will vehemently disagree and seems to take that as a personal slight.
The best piece of advice I ever saw for essay writing or anything that will be commented on- you write the first draft for yourself, the second for the reader, the third for critics. It’s like he’s never had a piece of honest feedback on his writing in his life.
He’s like a pianist with butchers hands breaking eggs all over a piano while he tries to play- it’s just a cacophony of busted logic and weird assumptions backed up by poorly understood and misapplied psychobabble. A real mess.
That Sarge piece was the most cack-handed, cock-eyed piece of writing I’ve ever read.
If the aim was to try and rehabilitate his mate Sarge he just fuckign buried him.
A complete shit show from go to whoa.
If that wasn’t a troll- if Monty really believes that Sarge – after he admitted to a sexual assault on a colleague- was sacrificed on the altar of political correctness in some form of cancel culture, then I just don’t know what to say other than that is fully cooked.
Emotional reasoning, irrationality- walk around in the room full of mirrors.
To be fair, the closer on this article was very funny.
And youre all over it!!
Standing up for rapists and genocide says alot about a bloke . Click bait or just clueless , neither is good
Didn’t think I’d be discussing such things below the line on BG but wowee, here we are.
In the modern day, with socials and clicks and the fight for instant attention and instant gratification, the art of reasoning, logic, and coherence has gone. Writers don’t know what it is, and readers don’t know what it should be.
The M.O of writers, bloggers, TikiTokers, Grammers etc today is shout something with force and bluster and claim it as fact. Refresher: a claim or an opinion is just a claim or an opinion. Like: “Tokyo is the best city in the world.” Just an opinion. No evidence, no reasoning, no examples, no stats to back that claim up. Just shout it louder, try to shout down dissenters, or humiliate them, or invoke any number of logical fallacies. Anything but actual evidence to support a claim.
And readers are so dumb these days from their instant scroll scroll scroll scroll that they can’t be fucked sitting on something for a few minutes and pondering its actual worth or value. “Well this person said it, and this person has 500,000 followers, so it must be true. Especially coz he said FACT! at the end…”
We are literally watching, in real time, the endumbification of humans.
Love it mate and fucking perfectly said. When you next back in Cooley, be good to catch up for a surf and a beer?
The fucking kicker? When someone takes the time to lay something out with coherence, unity, and solid evidence, editors or commenters put a note in saying, “TLDR” and give a couple line summary. They can’t even be fucken bothered to type it. Too long don’t read. Fuck me.
Late August/Early September mate. Should be a cracker. My wife’s parents and aunts/uncles are joining us this time. Not a lick of English, never been abroad, applying for a passport now. Salt of the earth island folk from down south Japan, but chaperoning them for a couple weeks…With the tin lids in tow? I’ll need that fucking beer mate!
Hahahaha faaarking hell mate that sounds hectic so yeh let’s grab a cold one. Be warned though cuz I jokingly refer to city folk from Sydney moving up here as rich poofters some on here think I am a racist who back in the 60s would have called blacks niggers for some utterly bizarre reason. Maybe best to leave your Japanese family at home cuz who knows what my mainly Greek/Spanish filthy mouth would be calling them ay hahahahaha
Haha I’m from Sydney. Not rich. Not a poofter. From Cronulla. The poorest fucken beach in Sydney til 30 years ago. Now 3 mill+ barely buys a 3-bedder back up the Kingsway in fucken Woolooware! Last I checked, Richard fucken Roxburgh was starring in an ad on Domain for a 7.5mill house in Greenhills, just north of Wanda and up the hill from Cronulla High, where Occy learned his times tables and how to drop in. 7.5mill! Ised to be fucken hills of sand and corrugated iron beach shacks. Gentrification at its best.
Don’t worry about my wife’s family. The only English words they know are hello, bye bye, and fuck!
Hahahahaha be good to have a beer mate
Just FYI bruz I saw that interaction and you weren’t being called a racist. Calling people “poofters” today was being compared to calling people “n…..s” 40 years ago just to illustrate an equivalent social issue across the intervening decades. I.e calling a black person a n 40 years ago was sort of similarly equivalent in terms of social progress to calling a gay person a poofter today. Not actually calling you racist. As in maybe don’t use the word gay as an insult. Maybe just call the city blow ins pansies or smooth hand keyboard jockey softcocks instead. Do you know what I mean?
A bit parroted / plagiarised, but no less true.
Which is why there is no value in opinion pieces or “reporting”. The value is in subjective, human creativity.
It’s all we have left.
gretatoofatthumberg…
Wrong person to direct your harangue, sorry –
My opinion of religion in general is:
“If camels believed in God, God would look like a camel”
Steven Hawking was correct when he said: “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”
Isn’t this just what you have been doing this last few stories? Were there no horrors occurring elsewhere or to anyone else up until the shots rang out across Bondi?
You’re cherry picking convictions, and poorly.
Erm – how well are they educating people in Australia these days?
Not very well apparently –
Approximately SIX MILLION Jewish people were murdered in the Holocaust. This systematic, state-sponsored genocide, also known as the Shoah, was perpetrated by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators between 1933 and 1945.
been that a math question, 75 years count back to 1950, so you didnt math’ed well enough your comment… also, nazi/allies/collabs hatred got primarily christian (pope’s actual endorse & all…) inspiration, so another religious (cough cough dumb) people to blame in that instance… dont know oz school system much but apparently they provide better education in brazzoland than whatever shithole you got yours… well at least they teach photog good enough for you to make a leaving…
I just looked up this comment you made.
it’s from Reddit. HAHA
Monty its clear now you read the comments section here and I have a genuine question for ya that I am fascinated to know the answer to. Why did you think it would be a good idea to bring up a sleazy, disgusting story about a mate of yours from twenty years ago who has said nothing about it publicly since it happened? It’s not like you brought up fresh evidence to claim it never happened so what the actual fuck were you trying to achieve? I love Brutus and his honesty and respect him as a person and for standing up for his mate but you just seemed to drag up his sordid demise for no reason other than maybe generating some views on your article? You didn’t engage in the comments and try and help Brutus clear your mates name so what was your goal in bringing that disgusting ordeal back up?
Same with Andy story….. you may have noticed?
Some writers get paid per word he gets paid per comment.
I thought it was pretty clear, was sarges cancelation to hash and is it time for him to resume journalism in surf. For me the answer is also clear No and assuming he is mentally/emotionally strong enough yo survive the modern day comments section, Yes
El Multicultural no bueno, pero assimilation muy buen.
I prefer light single to double concave with a slight vee behind the trailing fin…oh, wait, wrong website.
HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!!!
Lol!
Don’t you know its all about pluggy twins?
2026 will be the year that asymmetrical surfboards make a significant impact on the marketplace, as surfers finally look down and realize, “no, my feet are not the same front and back so why are tradtional surfboard outlines symmetrical”?
Matt Parker give you a free board to post that?
No, it was Ryan Lovelace – says I should be able to surf like William Aliotti on it
I prefer a HyptoKrypto, so I can surf like a middle age cook. Been working on my vulgas back knee Craig Anderson half squat.
if lindas expertise runs in the family i wouldnt mind getting ‘sarged’ whilst asleep by this ryan guy…
perhaps you would know that MP took Ryan Burch’s Asyms..
that fad has already washed through.
interesting segway from Greta and the gang…..but in a sense JSC is right…..asymetric surfboards are definitely a design are where too little has been done…and actually it’s illogical to have symetric surfboards and fins……been dooing em for years….tow bds for RCJ etc……probably needs a whole page to explain turning radius’s etc……..Ryan Burch has been at the modern forefront of this design……
It seems so obvious…..and yet, my brain rebels. Indoctrination!
I guess if you want to do exactly the same radius turn both forehand and backhand from a fixed stance an asymmetrical board makes perfect sense. But who would be that boring? Boards are symmetrical so they are balanced between turns, by changing foot positions or hip angles you can create different radius turns which is why the best surfers move their feet and drop the back knee.
Second hand marketplace
This comment all day long!
Performative activism goes both ways. Is it performative to link a protest on a bridge to the bondi shooting? to pressure state gov to reduce civil liberties through rushed legislation? To relaunch a political career in the wake of this event? Or immediately blame the sitting gov whilst the victims of the shooting were still bleeding out?
Its all been a performance. Thats the infuriating part of it all.
