The Western Australia Margaret River Pro opens its window in under 24 hours and there our heroes will be after competing in a near storybook Gold Coast Pro. You certainly recall Julian Wilson’s charge through the trials all the way into the finals of the main event. It was there that the World Surf League overtly screwed Wilson but they had already overtly screwed the ultra hardcore surf fan days earlier.

But did you know that, yesterday, local favorites Jacob Willcox and Willow Hardy took out the Think Mental Health WA Trials and will be competing alongside the rest of the Championship Tour mainstays very soon? The surf allegedly pumping?

In a thrilling men’s final, Jacob Willcox edged out Jack Thomas (Yallingup), in a high-stakes showdown that brought the beach to its feet. Willcox, who competed on the elite Championship Tour in 2024, looked sharp and composed all day, using his local knowledge and experience to secure his return to the main event in front of a passionate home crowd.
Willcox posted the highest individual score of the day, a near-perfect 9.00, on his opening wave of the final and backed it up with a 7.73, finishing with a combined total of 16.73 (out of a possible 20). Thomas rallied with some brilliant surfing of his own, finishing with a two-wave total of 15.58 (out of a possible 20).
I suppose a “had-to-be-there” moment and you, likely, did not know until just right now.
One enraged ultra hard surf fan had the temerity to openly wonder, “They use all the WSL event infrastructure. 12 men 12 women. Mix of former CT surfers, rising stars, state champions and local talent from across Western Australia. Seems a massive misstep from the WSL? Showcase new talent, build hype, create storylines, perfect sized event to run in a day, too, and all at minimal cost to them. Am I missing something here? Overshadowing the main event if it pumped is the only shortsighted argument I can come up with.”
