With tears barely dry on the pecan cheeks of Brazilian surf fans following Gabriel Medina’s unsuccessful push for a wild card to the Teahupoo Pro the cosmos has now conspired to give Medina an injury wildcard to the event.
Alejo Muniz, y’see, has withdrawn from the grand slam to go under the knife after getting winged at Jeffreys Bay.
Today the news isn’t very good. I won’t be able to participate in the Tahiti stage this year, after the injury I suffered in Jbay, I did the exams, talked to my doctors and I’ll have to undergo shoulder surgery. The good news is that I’ll have plenty of time to recover before the start of next year’s season and be more than 100%. Good luck to all the Brazilians in Tahiti!

But there’s a little twist and it ain’t in Medina’s busted titty.
The wildcard is his but only if he wants it.
Gabriel Medina was told he was eligible for an injury wildcard which Medina subsequently refused saying it would be too last-minute.
As pointed out, it was likely surf fans would be unable to see Medina compete until the 2026 Bells event given the WSL’s decision to begin the tour in May instead of January.
Well, well.
What’s he gonna do now two weeks out?

Easter is Early April. Potentially Bells could start late March depending on how they schedule the comp. But the Newcastle comp (just before Bells) will effectively be a CT event minus the top seeds, so will be interesting I suppose. Ditto for Pipe, which will be really weird as it’s a challenger comp and I don’t know if CT surfers are allowed to compete.

“pipe challenger” comp is scheduled for Jan 28 – Feb 8. Not sure if it will actually be “pipe masters” or “pipe pro” or some other name. It’s a challenger series event.
If it’s not Medina… ‘Chopes is the one and only place where I’d say give the injury wild card to Kelly if he’s interested.

I’m in the 2nd chance comp. There are 9 of us left. 4 have used Italo, 5 have used Yago. Don’t know if anyone has used jack robbo or miggy. I’m tending towards Yago but he will get either the lowest ranked wildcard or maybe Seth. In any other location I’d be confident. Here, not so much!
In the original comp there’s only 2 guys left, It was brutal because all the top surfers have been used already. I think both guys who progressed went with Connor.

Yep, but it’s all about seeding. Normally you can just eyeball it in as post-cut matchups are easy to calculate unless there are upsets (1st vs 16th, 2ns vs 15th, etc). But in events like here and pipe, the wildcards can wreak havoc and you’d almost rather go with seed 4 (Italo) than seed 1 (Yago). I have not used Barron and he’s on my list but so it Yago, Miggy, Connor and Jack R. Everyone else is in the same boat of course, and I wonder if anyone will have the balls to put it all on Kauli Vaast.

It might be under 1.05 (d) (former world champ or “finalist”) or might be under 1.08 (a) event replacement “at sole discretion of WSL”. Either way it looks like the WSL can just ask anyone they want post-cut and injury replacement surfers are only pre-designated for the pre-cut comps.
They’ve already shuffled “the rules” this season with the final 5.
