"Oh, these dolphins are so smart. They will know not to hit me."
Surfing is certainly more interesting with Griffin Colapinto in it. But who could have foreseen the San Clemente ripper with an Alfred E. Neuman charm would transition into a wise-beyond-years surf sage, able to absorb the lessons of great masters like methylated multivitamins. Colapinto channeled the iconic Mahatma Gandhi, for example, to tap down the rage of Brazilian surf fans and also practiced a peaceful non-violence when some began poking fun at him for dating a high school girl.
Now, he has shared much wisdom about the majestic dolphin. When the 27-year-old was in South Africa, for the just-wrapped J-Bay Open, a filmer captured him riding a wave with a pod of Cetacea. People Magazine, hot on the story, asked him to describe the moment and he shared thusly:
I’m like, ‘Oh, these dolphins are so smart. They will know not to hit me’, So I was like, ‘This would be so fun to ride with them, so I just flipped it’.”
“I could see them,” he continued of his perspective mid-ride, declaring he was “looking right at them while racing down the line. I just did that long floater at the end because I felt like that’s what a dolphin would do.”
When asked what it all meant, he answered, “It’s crazy. The dolphins, they’re not scared of humans at all. They come right up to you and right under you. It’s just like, ‘Whoa, we’re a part of something crazy here’. Magical as it gets. I just think about that being special, a good omen almost. Yeah, it’s a good omen for me.”
