Gatekeepers to Mexico’s best surf spot introduce women-only sessions

“Would be so cool to do this at all our breaks in Cali.”

The gal’s big-wave star Bianca Valenti, a long-time equal pay advocate who famously coached an old-man VAL into a middish set at Mavericks, has celebrated the decision by the burghers of a lil Mex town to grant women and kids exclusive access to one of Mexico’s best waves.

Girls hours at Barra De La Cruz today was LIT! First time in 31 years of surfing that I’ve experienced an absolute paradigm shift where the town opens the surf to girls / women and kids (under 14) only! The line up was filled with girls and women cheering each other on and absolutely going for it! Super super AMAZE.

The town of Barra de la Cruz, which hosts a wave you’ll remember if you old, from Rip Curl’s 2006 contest there and won by an electric Andy Irons and where the world was turned onto a barrel machine hitherto unseen anywhere in the world, has mandated that only gals and kids can surf from ten til twelve on Sundays.

As reported by Surfer,

Although the session benefits women and little kids, it was men from La Asociación de Surf de La Barra de la Cruz, who came up with the idea and enforce it each weekend. At 10 a.m., a local walks to the edge of the sand, sounds a piercing whistle, and it’s time for a shift change. 

Encouraged by the decision, women-surfers quickly advocated for similar motions across the world.

Would be so cool to do this at all our breaks in Cali. It’s so hard to surf here as a woman unless your on a longboard.

Perhaps requesting the same thing daily would be the next request? A lady can dream right?

Is Snapper next or is Australia too riven by sexism and an innate cruelty to consider such a progressive move?
