It is the most wonderful time of the year, for our surfing sisters who live on the wave-thin eastern seaboard. The period wherein mighty storms form in the Atlantic and push feathering barrels toward otherwise placid shores. Our hunsrückisch brasilien brothers call it “orkaan tsayt” but you likely know it as “hurricane season.”
I suppose we’ve been in hurricane season since June 1st though one is currently spinning to life and her name be Erin.
The lady, currently east of the Dominican Republic, has just been upgraded to a Category 4 and is arcing north and west. Though not expected to make landfall in the United States, her swell generation will be felt at the start of next week.
According to the National Hurricane Center, “Swells generated by Erin will affect portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Turks and Caicos Islands through the weekend. These swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the east coast of the United States early next week. These rough ocean conditions will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.”
And according to the World Surf League’s official forecast partner Surfline, “We have high confidence that Erin will take a recurving track, sending widespread swell throughout the Caribbean and along the East Coast. Looking longer term, Erin is forecast to track into the North Atlantic, becoming a powerful extratropical cyclone and sending a very solid shot of long-period swell toward the U.K. and parts of Europe. We’ll be keeping a close eye on that as well.”
Oh, cool. The U.K. gets in on the action too.
