Now, when most folk think of a “surf trip,” Hawaii, Australia, California, Mexico, Tahiti, Fiji, South Africa or Costa Rica pop first to mind. Coastal countries/states with iconic waves and storied surf cultures. The advent of the man-made wave tub has changed the equation, lightly, as most tanks are plopped in coastal countries/states anyhow.
Which all makes what is happening in Utah so extraordinary. The Beehive State, as it is called, is a Mormon utopia with a great salt lake but no rideable waves. All that is changing and quick. The world’s largest PerfectSwell pool is being dug in the southern bit and up north a slice of river is being transformed into a standing wave.
The Weber (pronounced Weeber) River, which flows through Ogden, currently has a concrete weir in its middle and the city has dubbed it a “navigation hazard.” Instead of just ripping it out, though, the plan is to replace it with a “surf wave.”
Phil Suiter, a stormwater engineer with the city, declared, “It’s no longer in use and so we’re good to remove it; but we’re going to maintain that weir height and just put in the surf wave instead. So there’s like an elevation drop from the top to the bottom, and that’ll allow the water to flow down and kick up a wave there.”
The project comes with a $3 million dollar price tag but Suiter believes it will be worth it as do many residents.
“I think it’s going to be cool, honestly,” James Gardner told the local CBS station. “I think it’ll be badass to see some people out here surfing and doing their thing rather than just kayaking and having to jump out beforehand.”
What’s more, when the traditional Mormon work ethic is applied to shredding, it is very likely that Utah will start producing world champions.

Hawaii is an interesting situation in US politics. Place is absolutely dominated by democrats politically. It’s a bit like Orange County. As a result, the republican/right tend to get frustrated when anything about politics arises as they are the minority politically and racially. Keep in mind, most of the commenters supposedly from Hawaii are not Hawaiian, that’s the rub. We really only have LGR (Happy as he now likes) and Occ who both seem to be white guys living in Hawaii, and Huli who I assume might have some Hawaiian blood but not sure. JSC doesn’t count as “he’s so Haole he doesn’t even know he’s Haole”. See what I did there?

Hawaii is politically interesting because it has the largest percentage of Union employees in the nation. 26%. the highest of all states in the nation. The Unions run Hawaii through Government unions, Hotel and Travel unions, construction and and most important, shipping.
Hawaii dies without shipping. shipping is 100% strong arm union. Hawaii does what the unions tell them to do…..or Hawaii dies.
Union employees vote for who the union tell them to vote for.
basically Hawaii is a circle of corruption, wherein developers, contractors and companies are forced to hire union employees, because of the regulations imposed by the government that favor employers who employ union employees.

Let us re-visit the union thing. Are you against the firefighters union? Do you think anyone who gets and takes union benefits should deny such benefits including the pension as you are claiming that unions are the nothing but bad?

I am not against the firefighters union, or the police union.
I am against the government workers union. I do not believe the union should influence our government. I think unions at a certain period of time were very important…but now that government and safety regulations are law, most unions have become obsolete. I believe in pensions for certain civil service employees, but not all. Government pensions are in the greatest causes of debt in the U.S. I am against all private industry unions, and unions that can cause significant harm.
Union employees get paid very good wages. Firefighters in Hawaii average $80,000 to $95,000, chiefs make $129,000 where as the heads of the fire department make over $200k per year not including over time, bonuses, etc.
The head of the Firefighters Union makes $185,000 per year.

You said it on here before back when you were LGR. Not digging at anything except pointing out that you are against certain unions and not others, likely because you have people close to you that benefit from union membership and representation. Just doesn’t make sense to be pro certain unions and anti others based on the idea that laws make unions obsolete. By that way of thinking, there shouldn’t be any need for any unions of any kind. To be clear, I am not pro-union. Just pointing out some hypocrisy.
No, I’m anti-union. I’d prefer that it be an association that does not have ability to strike. However, if Unions are a necessary evil, my preference would be only for necessary civil service that benefit the safety of the civilian population. I am completely anti any union striking. I believe union strikes are just mob style strong arm extortion tactics.
Unfortunately many government and private industry unions threaten the safety and welfare of the community, like when the Police, or Fire departments, air traffic controllers, sanitation workers, shipping unions, etc. strike. This is dangerous and harmful to the public.
As far the family member who worked for VCFD; he is my sons brother.
I don’t know him well, although I know he shreds in surfing and was a pretty cool kid many years ago. He has since transferred back to L.A County. I don’t really care whether a union benefits any of my family.
I’ve always owned my own companies and never relied on anyone to take care of me for my entire life…however, if you service in the military, police, fire, or lifeguard, you deserve to be taken care of.
