It was one of the more surreal revelations to come out of an obscure Brazilian interview with three-time world champ Gabriel Medina – in 2021 the League had charged him $30,000 for the official trophy commemorating his title.
The claim about the trophy highlighted an undisclosed practice by the WSL and cast a long shadow over the sport’s governing body.
Gabriel Medina explained that the trophy he received was a replica, not the original.
“I was waiting for my third world title,” Medina told the channel. “Then the guy said, ‘Do you want one of these? 30,000 dollars.’”
The cost, equivalent to roughly 160,000 Brazilian reais, stunned Medina, who possessed the original trophies from his 2014 and 2018 victories, and didn’t pay a cent for either of ‘em.
“I’ve never told anyone,” he added, breaking his silence on the issue.
This year’s champion, the doe-eyed Yago Dora, a man without an enemy and a friend to all apparently, has been spared the thirty-gee slug according to his fashion model girlfriend Isa Sermann, click here to see Isa guzzle from water bottle.
Sermann said the new-ish World Surf League CEO Ryan Crosby, disgraced former CEO Erik Logan’s eventual replacement, was responsible for the shift in company policy.
The WSL even offered to ship it to Brazil. However, since the trophy needed to arrive with Yago, we opted to pay for it ourselves. I believe this change to no longer having to pay was largely due to the change in CEO, who has been doing a GREAT JOB.
It marks Ryan Crosby’s third strike against Elo’s policies: the mid-year sackings, the Finals Day, and now paid trophies, all Elo’s initiatives and all of ’em cut down by Crosby’s sabre.
