Surf fans hold breath as famous Florence family, including newborn baby, set sail on three-thousand nautical mile voyage…
The tour truant John John Florence, along with baby Deb, wife Lauren, and brothers Ivan and Nathan, a two-time Surfer of the Year winner, have been, as BeachGrit readers will attest, sailing the unsellable yacht Vela back home from New Zealand to Hawaii.
In 2015, John John Florence had declared, “My ultimate goal with sailing is to be able to travel fast, cover long distances, and go surfing. I want to combine the two.”
And Nathan Florence, whose hair is redder than his older brother, with skin as paper thin, literally and figuratively, wasn’t far behind.
Still, everything gets old, even degrading dialogue or the spitting of saliva mouth to mouth, and in 2023, John John Florence listed his 48-foot catamaran, a gunboat previously owned by Travis Rice before him, for $1.349 million.
The sales pitch was compelling.
The embodiment of spirit and adventure, this Gunboat 48 is on the search for her next custodian!
Borne of Gunboat’s singular focus to quality and durability, “Vela” has spent most of her life travelling some of the worlds most spectacular locations with some of the worlds foremost watermen and adventurers.
Now its your turn to join the legend…..
“Vela” is currently lying in the North of New Zealand and has been a recent recipient of an extensive refit ensuring that she is 100% ready to go on her next adventure. Lightweight, robust and featuring North 3di technology flying from a Marstrom Carbon mast supported by ECsix carbon rigging, The Gunboat 48 strikes the balance between performance and comfort in a manner rarely seen on performance catamarans under 50ft.
The saloon space flows beautifully into the hulls and forward in to the forward cockpit, sail handling area which of course leaves the aft cockpit space open and free for socialising and watching the world go by.
Recently returning to her original metallic blue hull colour with black accenting provided by the forebeam, mast and trampolines, “Vela” is champing at the bit to get back to exploring!
Professionally managed and maintained, “Vela” is currently winterised with all sails serviced and stored with North Sails NZ.
As reported back then,
“The yacht was made very famous, of course, in Florence’s video series of the same name when surf fans around the world wondered if he was through with professional surfing altogether.”
Of course, as anyone who has owned a boat will agree, the great boat owning paradox is you might be able to buy ‘em but you sure as hell can’t sell ‘em unless you’re ready to take the biggest hit of your life.
So the Vela is coming home to Haleiwa.
But not before many adventures in the South Pacific.
And, earlier today, John John Florence informed his two million Instagram followers that the Vela, along with his precious cargo of family and crew, have left Vanuatu for Oahu, some three thousand nautical miles to the south-west.

At their current clip of thirteen knots, real quick if you wanna know, it’ll take the gang 24 days to make it to Haleiwa, although this assumes constant speed with no stops, currents, weather delays, surf stops any sorta refuelling.

Many risks en route, including medical emergencies (five days away from a hozzy), crew fatigue (one bad decision, capsize), equipment failure, sudden wind gusts (cats flip if caught broadside with full sail) and so on.
Thoughts, prayers etc.

Capn William Bligh is looking down and laughing at these fellows
The idea of huge storm open swell scares the shit outta me.
Channel crossings are far worse than open ocean. It’s pretty freaky when swell bounces back and forth coming from every direction.
This year I’m using a Pelican Catch Mode 110 kayak with a 36lb transom motor to hit up north of Gaviota.
You ain’t getting much further than Razors with that setup. Keep an eye on that wind or you might be getting picked up at Santa Cruz Island.
Adventure awaits!
Good luck with that. The best waves are too far for the amount of battery capacity that thing can carry
If you hit it morning glassy calm you can pick up the noon wind downward back to the pier after a surf. Plus, I have a paddle and can stand up on this version of kayak. I know at least one of the Florence Marine X brothers is reading this, please chime in.
Make sure to get a hand held EPIRB…

The wind doesn’t blow back to the pier, it blows directly to the south at a very rapid pace. You are at least 3 nm from the pier to the first place you can surf, that’s a long way for an electric motor to be going.
All I’m saying is be careful with the wind.
Maybe I’ll see Dave Parmenter out there.
You got this! Don’t let rational thought steal your dreamz away from you. The haters don’t have the balls to do this, so they just want to rain on your nautical domination parade.
Theres no “i” in “team” but there’s two in “irrational thought”.🤙🏼
He only needs to get there. Then he can think about how to get back.
How did Oahu get moved to 3000 miles south west of Vanuatu? You been hanging out at Hippy’s house or what Dez?
Not sure! I Grok’d it!
He could call torryn Martin to come and sail it for him ?
oh yeah , i forgot , torryn has a captain that sails his dads boat for him
Rich guy problems
So is he sailing to Oz or Oahu?
Ozahu.
They appear to be going to Oz on vessel finder but that is not on JJF’s Insta.
Oz! I got mixed up! New story incoming!
That’s my world champ
I know Hawaii isn’t the biggest fan of being part of the USA but that’s wild Oahu would secede to be part of Australia.
Also Nate! Wow that guy can be in Ireland and sailing to Oahu Australia at the same time. I knew he was a darling but this is exceptional even for a man of his caliber.
Sometimes you bust down the door; other times the door busts down you.
If captain Cook had have made it off the big island with his head intact history may have included Hawaii as part of the british colonies
New Ireland?
Boat turned around!
Geez what a life ! Good on em .
That’s going to be a long mostly uphill ride with high pressure in both the north and south pac looking to dominate through that period.
Could make it more comfy by getting to the equator and riding the westerly anomalies forecast to ramp up until you get east enough, then ride a less brutal angle in. But that would mean missing the majority of islands with surf and maybe double the distance.
Have fun boys and girls!
15 knots if the bro’s are jorking it.
God speed!
