"A REALLY serious example of unsporting conduct."
Surf fans, everywhere, but mostly in America, were stunned and shocked and dismayed, days ago, after the International Surfing Association announced that it had fined Team USA a whopping $4000 after a boy aged under 16 did an incident of a derogatory/rude gesture towards the judges.
The matter unfolded during round four of the World Surfing Championships, down in Peru, the ISA releasing the following statement:
Today we saw an incident of a derogatory/rude gesture towards the judges by Makai Castle from Team USA in round 4 of the Boys U-16 division. The ISA Technical and Contest Directors reviewed the incident firsthand and on video and deemed that Castle’s actions were a serious example of unsporting conduct. As such, and in accordance with our disciplinary section of the ISA Rulebook, Team USA was fined $4,000 for unsporting conduct and derogatory gestures towards the judges together with a strong warning against such future behavior.
American surf fans were left to wonder what, exactly, the unsporting conduct and derogatory gestures were, as no American could take the torture of actually watching a World Surfing Championship heat. Consensus amongst American surf fans, with some Australian surf fans sprinkled in, was that Castle must have flipped a bird, though a subset held firm that he might have flashed a bras d’honneur.
Thankfully, the saints at Duke Surf fell on the sword a released an image of Castle flipping not one but two birds towards the judges.
Wow.
Team USA lucky to have escaped with a $4000 fine instead of an $8000 fine ($4000 per bird). Or maybe each bird is $2000 and the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave copped the full sting.

Officially it’s $2000 per bird in the junior divisions, and $4000 in the open or seniors, for a first offense.
So yes, USA did “cop the full sting” given Makai’s age and lack of an international flipping history.
Though some say he should’ve been given a ban too…
