Bali influencers feel the sting of Bali's immigrasi!

Canggu Under Siege as Bali’s ICE Unit Hunts Illegal Content Creators

"Influencers have ruined travel everywhere!"

Bali, a one-time surf paradise long marketed as a tropical refuge for the digitally untethered, has begun treating the influencer economy less like a harmless and sexy theatre and more as an immigration problem.

In recent months Indonesian authorities have launched an aggressive crackdown on foreign content creators working on tourist visas. Even the most casual forms of online promotion can now be interpreted as illegal commercial activity.

Sponsored Instagram posts, brand collaborations, barter arrangements with hotels, unpaid photo shoots for cafés or swimwear labels – all work, say Bali’s take-no-shit immigrasi. .

A real interesting raft of comments on the post below, some digging the cops hauling away the influencers, others calling the move dumb and self-defeating.

People have different reasons why they don’t like influencers, but the reality is they do bring more tourism to places like Bali, where tourism is a huge part of the economy.

If you don’t believe that, look at what happened in 2020 when people couldn’t travel.

Obviously visitors should be respectful, but more people coming means more money spent on housing, food, transportation, and local businesses, which brings more opportunity to the area and more jobs for locals.

Then,

Influencers have ruined travel everywhere. Thailand changing entry laws. Indonesia cracking down on “working” while a tourist. Japan blocking pictures. All good things

The shift marks a real sharp pivot from Bali’s previously permissive atmosphere, where influencers, wellness entrepreneurs and remote workers folded themselves into the island’s economy without scrutiny.

For years, entire neighbourhoods of Canggu and Ubud evolved around this semi-visible ecosystem: smoothie bowls photographed at sunrise by childless forty-year-old gals in underpants, surf clips from nose-mounted POV cams monetised through affiliate links, luxury villas traded for “exposure.”

But since April 2026, Bali’s immigration authorities have moved decisively to dismantle the ambiguity.

A newly established unit known as the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force has begun monitoring social media accounts while simultaneously conducting patrols through the island’s influencer enclaves.

In the first three weeks of operations, authorities scooped up sixty-two foreigners.

Officials have been unusually direct about the new interpretation of the law. Whether or not money changes hands is no longer considered relevant. Immigration authorities insist that unpaid promotional work still provides commercial benefit and therefore falls outside the conditions of a tourist visa.

“I wasn’t paid, boss,” will not be accepted as a defence.

The penalties are severe enough to rattle an industry that has changed the face of what used to be lonely surfer towns like Canggu. Violators may face fines, deportation, and bans from re-entering Indonesia that can extend for years, even, permanently.

Authorities have also pushed back against what appears to be a growing misconception that Bali’s tourist levy somehow gives the right to do business on the island. Paying the arrival tax, officials emphasise, does not confer permission to work.

Foreign creators intending to shoot branded content, collaborate with local businesses or monetise their presence online are now being instructed to secure appropriate documentation before arrival, including work permits or Indonesia’s E33G Remote Worker Visa.

Are they also heading over to Sanur to round up pensioners making the ” How to live on your pension in Bali/ Sanur/Indonesia” content ?
The makers often have a library of videos each detailing one of the of the south east asian countries. Some then build more content by doing town by town comparisons.
Readers here might try to live the dream but the grim future of penury is coming for most of you and this set of content makers will help you negotiate pension life outside the high costs of Australia.
Or you could become a worthless parasite like the surf encyclopedia guy .Exploiting the commons for personal gain- a road to perdition.
One upside to this activity is most of the guys making these videos have 40 year old female underpants wearing sidekick so the future for some influencers is assured.

Capt Sensible

Tourism producing so much Garbage in Bali that soon no one will want to visit there due to the stink n mess. Garbage management is the next big industry needing content creation.

Capt Sensible

The real filth

Trev

I assume it would be ok but if the surfer is getting free accom or payment for posts about a surf camp, villa, etc that might be a problem.

Joe the average

Which a lot of them do.

thanksdude

I will say, from a boots on the ground perspective, that these digital nomads and influencers have indeed made a mess of things. Almost 4 decades of time in Indo and I found myself there with my family as Covid began the ockdown…..we chose to stay while 95% of the tourists ejected. We were blessed to enjoy what Bali must have been like in the 70’s for a full 8 months……magic! The most special time of my life. Went back for a holiday a year later and it sure was different; 2 years later and we went “holy shit what happened?” I will always love Bali and the people, culture, and magic it delivers…..godspeed Bali 🙏🏼

heliosart pacifica

Most of these digital nomads are worthless employees of tech companies who don’t do any real work. And a lot of these influencers are digital nomads.

Meta laid off 1/4 of it’s “work”force a few days ago. Others will follow. A lot of these people are doing 5 hours of work a week and getting paid for 40 and the party is about to be over – at some point in the very near future there will be a tech bloodbath and they’re all going to be axed.

Now for the bad news.

They’re going to be returning home to live with mom and dad, they’re going to unemployed long-term, and they’re going to be clogging up your local.

I’m asking my wife to put my Pets.com sock puppet to wash. I want to be ready.

https://uploads.disquscdn.c…

Bashar

And not a moment too soon! The tech types you described are the most insufferable, entitled cunts

Sean Connery

Bashar…I would like to throw real estate agents into the mix as well for that coveted award.

Hippy

8.5

Trev

Not sure why I’m defending real estate agents but you can’t do it remotely and if they don’t hustle they don’t eat. They are not clogging up the peak at Canggu

Sean Connery

I could care less about the peak at Canggu Trev. I’m more worried about sharing time in the water with them at my local.

Trev

Haha, they are probably saying the same about you and your your industry.
At my local I’m amazed when I’m getting out after the early session how many Dads are getting in after dropping the kids at school.
They can’t all be surf website owners with rich wives 😂😂

Sean Connery

Nobody works anymore. I am convinced of that.

7dollarsurfboard

Good on the Bali govt… it’s about time these influencer parasites went out and got proper jobs.

@TheRealJackMeoff

Peak BG.

While much “influencer” content coming out of Bali is superfluous dross, the sheer volume of content that makes the island seem like paradise on earth and generally ignores the problems of traffic, rubbish and sewage, are basically an advertising campaign for Bali and for Indonesia as a whole for which the government pays nothing – now, they want to hassle these people and deport them for breaking the immigration rules?

Unless it is simply a campaign by the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force to collect cash kopi money to look the other way, it’s a great example of a location shooting itself in the foot and driving away future visitors and their spending for no rational reason whatsoever.

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

visitors wont’ stop- they’ve barely scratched the surface of the asian market.

Blowin

Some people don’t understand the point of something existing if it’s not to destroy it in exchange for paper money.

astro

Billions being poured into India. Guess where the next middle class is going to come from 15-20 years out ? Fuck knows what their population will be by then.
You Lennox cunts better like to cook curry.
Looking forward to Joe and Ronnie mangling Hindi tho !

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

already here

astro

And here !

Firelipe Torpedo

Never been to Bali but every time I see some crystal loving dipshit fold themselves into a pretzel by the pool so they can show off their towel sponsorship I’m less inclined to ever go.

JSC

You are at least 30 years too late in any case –

Firelipe Torpedo

So I’ve heard

BograilCutback

This

put

a smile on my stupid wog face.

Bashar

Hell yes. Fuck these digital content / digital nomad cunts who go to places like Bali and wax on, iced latte in hand on how amazing and cheap Bali is from a villa that was a rice paddy field not 3 years prior. Go to Bali, enjoy your holiday, then fuck off

Tom House

HELL FUCKING YES. Everywhere needs to follow suit. At least everywhere w inexpensive housing.

heliosart pacifica

Because you want them to make the places with expensive housing even more expensive?

The bottom line is illegal is illegal.

Anywhere.

If you want to immigrate someplace illegally you should view deportation as one of the risks.

Got a few illegals in my family – they know the risk of the game. In fact, illegals always know the game. It’s only entitled cunts that think immigration law doesn’t apply to them.

Tom House

I’m just talking about kicking influencers out of desirable places before they ruin every last decent square foot of this planet.

NEGATRON

Surfers were the original influencers ruining coastal towns. A slower process yes, but same shit sandwich.
