Now, I don’t imagine many, here, are splitting time between beach break closeouts and skate parks, like our dear friend Chris Cote. This seems a decidedly “surfing” crowd but I think most of us have enough experience with our cement and polyurethane bros to know the unique plague that infests their beloved rails, hubbas and ledges etc. Namely, scooter folk. People, mainly children, too unskilled to balance on a board so affix a handle then swing the thing around like a butterfly knife.
Unchill.
Surfers could sympathize, lightly, but also feel great that there was no real equivalent in the water. Certainly SUPs annoy and soft top kooks are a curse but nothing quite as bad as the scooter, which would never be able to be modified for water usage.
Until today.
Now, if I had only caught the YouTube, I might have thought this was a lake river thing and only been the smallest bit worried about institutional creep.
But I caught it on Instagram and fella was riding waves.
The horror, very real.
The foilscoot, for the foilscoot curious, was created by two-time European freestyle scooter champion Benjamin Friant who “discovered pumpfoiling and felt the same pull toward flow and progression, but he also saw the barrier. Pumpfoiling can be difficult to learn, intimidating to approach, and risky for many people. So he began experimenting again. One simple idea changed everything. He mounted a handlebar onto a board with a foil underneath. Despite having almost no foiling experience at the time, he managed to pump on his first attempt. The lesson was immediate. What most riders need first is control.”
