Dora backed it up with a 6.50, catapulting him into the lead but Brazilian surf fans, ever leery, knew shenanigans could come at any moment and come they almost did after Fioravanti threw an even bigger air. Thankfully the judges low-balled it at 7.50 thus ending the day and handing the trophy to Dora.
Still, though, somehow and in some way, Fioravanti moved up to number one in the world heading into Tahiti.

The bottom line was always money talks, and I was surprised to learn that baseball was the preferred choice for many, due to the long playing life, which equals most money, and finishing your career least crippled. If you couldn’t cut it in baseball, NBA, NFL where fallbacks. In a country where there are no fallbacks.
The most elite athletes on the planet aren’t interested in, or in the olympics. There’s fuck all money there, compared to other pro sports. It boils down to cold hard cash, in our ‘advanced’ capitalist, dog eat the lot, cultures.

When was the last time that you got a terrible board, brand new or second hand? Do the shaping machines spit out Dogs? Or do they all go fairly well enough?
I’ve bought mostly second hand boards for the last 15 years and been pretty happy with all of them, but the idea of paying US$650 or AU$1,000 for a board that works the way some of my 90s/early00s boards worked has always been scary.

Plenty reasons boards can be shit. And even with computer shapes, they still need a hand finish to refine the lines, beads, contours, etc. Mo can probably give much more insight but getting a computer shape won’t stop a board from being a dog.

Probably depends on the shaper, if you suck at shaping, you suck at shaping. Can’t imagine too many duds coming out of places like Channel Island, Lost, DHD, etc unless you fuck up the dims. Lots of the duds of the past were related to twisting blanks, shitty fin placement, and hand shaping errors. Prob not much different to 10 years ago but pretty different from 20 years ago.
have never ended up with an actual complete dud (or at least not sufficient dud – ish that I could distinguish between it being the board’s fault vs my own shortcomings) —- but on the other hand every board I’ve owned for my entire life has come from an east coast shaper
Most of the duds I’ve had were related to fins humming and the like. Took some CI’s to Northern Indo once and one of the bastards was humming so bad that we ripped the fins out and reset them. Only other major dud I can recall was a quad that just wouldn’t go over a certain speed, not sure if it was a board issue or the fact that it was a quad but I’m assuming it was the quad. Sold it immediately.

I could say the same but been riding them exclusively for years. Most likely duds were because the dims were wrong for you.

I bought customs at first, but eventually went stock . no regrets. i do have a few i got used.
never been able to gel with CI’s- I assume it’s just something about their rocker profiles that doesn’t feel right to me.

I just took a look at his website and they look good. Nice to be able to support local as well, when the quality is there.

I guarantee that none of us here who aren’t shapers would be able to tell the difference between a CAD cut board and a hand shape under our feet, or under the arm for that matter.
Either can be duds. Has happened a lot over the years with me because the shaper might not know what adjustments need to be made to scale up a model for a larger human.
But mostly, you get a dud either due to 1) the finishing, lamination, and sanding process; or 2) you weren’t honest with your shaper about your weight and surfing abilities.

I’ve found that the shapers who are big guys themselves like Biolos and Britt Merrick actually do a pretty good job with stock dims and models designed for big guys. Panda surfboards does a pretty good job of it too—every single custom I’ve got has been pretty magical.

without a competent finisher the board is a piece of foam and fibreglass.

usually the branded boards, CI/Lost etc have good stock boards that always work , as once you have a good performing model , you replicate it….so stock bds are much better now than before……but as they are just stock bds…a lot of surfers need more fine tuned design to compliment their styles/weights etc…..eg a front foot surfer has a completely different board set up…..fin placement/Rockers etc…..hence custom is King as an experienced designer shaper should be able to tune in any nuances that you have in body type/surfing level and for what waves……ah the joy of making magic!
I don’t believe the laminating sanding affect performance too much…except the longevity of the board!

Im not sure if other shapers do this but at Sharpeye you can buy mislabelled boards or team rider rejected boards that were never ridden for 1/3rd of the price. No duds so far.

This Just came out with Dan Mann saying that rockers on the larger FRKs were shit and they had to figure that part out, because they got it wrong at first. Somewhat Interesting.
The models I wanted to try were the Omni and the Cymatic, for when the point break got very small or the swell was weak. A friend had both and liked the Cymatic. He even bought another. I Never tried them, in the end.

I think surfboards today are the best they’ve ever been and a modern shortboard is a lot easier to surf than what they were making as late as 2010.
Math’s can be difficult but, at least here on the lower west coast of the US, 33,930 is a higher number than 33,845. Maybe favela and Coos Bay math’s are different though.
