Big Weekend.
It is Labor Day weekend, in America, with families across this great land enjoying the last bits of summer with hot dog and corn on the cob feasts. Coca Cola flowing like much cheaper Sam’s Cola. Simple enjoyments and easy livin’ except for those who live in Southern California and count a surfer, or two, amongst members.
For those non-surfing mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters are busily lighting candles for their shred kin, hoping beyond hope that they will survive the massive swell just beginning to manifest from the powerful tentacles of Hurricane Marie.
The National Weather Service office in Los Angeles wasted no time in posting a High Surf Advisory that will last from 6 a.m. Saturday through 11 p.m. Tuesday for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including Malibu and Catalina Island.
The big stuff.
“Increasing southerly swell will create hazardous surf conditions at the coasts,” the governmental agency warned.
Surfers, ever hellbent, are likely not to heed.
I just made the drive from Los Angeles to San Diego, through much traffic, and can attest that the swell lines from San Clemente to Oceanside stretched as far as the eye can see. But do you live here? Are you currently waxing your rhino chaser while your husband weeps over you? Where will you surf?

After a great Friday morning at a state park just south of San Clemente and an interesting Saturday, I just witnessed Koa Rothman at the Wedge as he was followed to his car by surf fans aching to ask him questions that matter most

I had a reason already to be in Malibu so I made the pilgrimage to first point. I blew my first two waves not remembering that longboards don’t turn if you don’t walk around a bit on them. Caught one down to the beach and left finally understanding the appeal of that lifestyle. 3rd point looked massive. Came back later in the afternoon to give it whirl. Wrong board, a too-thin old thruster. Got a few rides but got to watch some better surfers rip the piss out of it. Seems like everyone surfs and way too many people (normies, tourists). Lotta nice butts. I’m not going back this swell.
Just so happened to get into the water near Charlies, sheltered spot cause my daughter etc…, but still sets. Too much traffic to get to the meat. First time in a month coming off a desert/mountain work related trip.
Lots of sun, surf and fun times in Cali.

Not in town, but I would look at Windansea, Horseshoe, Blacks, 15th st, 29th st, Seaside, Suck Outs, Turtles, 85’s, Grandview, Ponto, Tamarack, O’side Harbor. Then I would have to put gas in my car, drive back to my mom’s house and walk down to surf 8th Street, which by that time would be blown out.
