"bob Marley is more played out than the 90s style trunks you dorks are wearing!"
Just over a week ago, Former, the brand fronted by Dane Reynolds, Craig Anderson and a handful of other core artists, released a gorgeous surf film onto the world. DEFECT features the aforementioned Reynolds and Anderson plus a wonderful grab bag of other talents, including Jay Davies, Dion Agius, Dillon Perillo and the inspirational Kai McKenzie, not to mention Matt Hoy, surfing a wide array of very cool waves around the globe all set to a bespoke soundtrack featuring lesser known bands like Chatterton, Cujo, Frog, The Lavender Flu, Bitch Magnet and MILK CULT.
It is a wonderful project, possibly a masterpiece, though surfing’s great polemist Joel Tudor, never one to withhold an opinion, let known that the music and the fashion are left wanting.
Taking to Instagram, a place with which the longboard impresario is familiar, Tudor declared, “Cool movie… hands down the worst soundtrack I’ve heard!”
There was some agreement to the sentiment with Reynolds, himself, even swinging in to share, “Sorry but turns out it’s hard to license Bob Marley and Grateful Dead.”
Well, that did not satisfy Tudor one bit. He returned even more worked up, elaborating, “Doggy Grateful Dead are worse than the soundtrack you chose… bob Marley is more played out than the 90s style trunks you dorks are wearing! The surfing in the movie & editing however was fantastic.”
Whoa!
Many things to parse, but let’s start with the overall soundtrack to DEFECT. Did you have an opinion? Does it mirror Tudor’s? Is bob Marley more played out than 90s style trunks?
