World Surf League schedule riddled with unfairness says Gabriel Medina.
Although the World Surf League has shuttered its grand slam circuit until April 2026, at least one of its biggest stars, Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, has kept the fires burning by slamming the beleaguered league for it’s injustice towards right-foot forward surfers.
“I don’t think it’s so fair, there are far more rights than lefts,” Gabriel Medina said. “I surf five waves facing the wave, and the other guys surf another five facing the wave. There’s always been this difference between right and left all these years, but anyway.”
Of the twelve waves on tour, there are five rights (Punta Roca, Bells, Snapper, Mars – yeah, I know, but who goes left, and J-Bay), four peaks if you include the Arabian pool and Lowers, and two lefts, ironically, the best waves on tour, Teahupoo and Cloudbreak.
Gabriel Medina has long been unafraid to bang on the windows of the World Surf League, joining a long proud line of Brazilians complaining about losing, notably in El Salvador and at Surf Ranch.
The one-time black knight of surfing, famous for his rain squalls of tears and thunderclap tantrums, the finger jabbing and those pretty black eyes wild and obsessed, usually reserves his complaints to judging or a not-so-subtle racism where whites are preferences over browns.
Back in August, the WSL was slammed after hot rodent guy Jack Robinson trounced Brazilian João Chianca at the Tahiti Pro.
Brazilian surf fans and their stars have long had form for weeping about contest results. This despite Brazilians, including Yago Dora, Gabriel Medina, Italo Ferreira and Filipe Toledo, winning six of the last seven world titles.
Do you think, per Gabriel Medina, that backsiders have a disadvantage on righthanders or, like me, does the simplicity of backside surfing actually gives the screwfoots an advantage over their regular-stanced rivals?
And is there a little irony in Yago Dora, as goofy and screwy as they come, being crowned world champion in the midst of Gabriel Medina’s complaint?

Yeah he’s a cry baby but without the brazilians, comp surfing is as vanilla as eric logans bum cheeks.
I’m not going to miss Gabe. Such a complainer with no self-awareness. There was a time when many of his complaints would have been valid but the last decade has proven that Brazilians are not unable to overcome this extreme injustices he speaks of. It’s exhausting.

What is this cult that has emerged in the surfing world ,where all these ex pro surfers old and young male and female are elevated to cult level idols and seen as the be all and end all of everything surfing and surfing adjacent ,if they keep.going at this rate shortly there will be more self flagulating ledgends than actual normal.surfers ..its fucken loose man.

Nah it’s not their success, they’ve both earned that. It’s the vibe. Gab and Italo just feel way too full-on — all points, competition focus, and no flow. Then you throw in the blingy lifestyle stuff… it’s so far removed from the core lords of the past it’s kinda embarrassing. And outside of surfing? Their fame’s basically non-existent, outside the surf world or Brazil. Compare that to Yago — stylish, fun, feels like he’s actually connected to surfing, not just milking it.
