The feted surfing metropolis of Huntington Beach, America’s official Surf City, is justifiably famous for many things: the US Open of Surfing, occasional riots, barn-like surf shops, a stretch of sand that sometimes gets real good, though most often not although surfing the pier is a test of skill and bravery, and one of the better humoured surfers to come out of southern California, the US Olympic surf coach Brett Simpson.
Also, Huntington Beach is famous for cancelling black history month and maybe not letting gorgeous cross-dressers read to kids at school.

And, it probs didn’t come as a surprise to anyone in Huntington Beach when, according to leftist Instagram accounts, “A neo-Nazi rally erupted in honour of Charlie Kirk’s death. They’re chanting, ‘white man, fight back.”
Another posted, “The scene underscored how extremists are exploiting the assassination to fuel racist calls to violence.
Reactions to the vision were uniformly unkind.
I live in Canada. Right now, it feels like I’m living above a meth lab about to explode.
“What are they fighting back? They’re the perpetrators.”
“I am a woman of color and have lived in Huntington Beach for the last 25 years. This city can get very scary at times.”
And, pointedly, from Gina Clayton-Tarvin, a local Dem,
“I live here in Huntington Beach, I’m a local elected official, on the school board. I am one of the only Democrats in office and have been fighting this Neo Nazi movement for over a decade. If you look closely, in the crowd, you can see one of the HB city council members, Councilman Butch Twining. He was amongst those chanting. Our city council consists of 7 alt right ultra MAGA Republicans who have made a sport of purposefully instigating and agitating the community with stunts like calling themselves the “Magnificat 7,” banning books they deem to be “Porn” from the public library, paying thousands for a giant plague in front of the public library that has a MAGA inscription. They have banned the Pride Flag. They passed a resolution naming themselves a “non sanctuary city in CA,” so that they can work with ICE. They celebrated wanting to deport our neighbors. The mayor, a former Long Beach police officer keeps a bust of Donald Trump on the dais during city council meetings, and more outrageous partisan antics. Look at my profile to see some recent posts on what I’ve been doing to stop their bigoted actions, including when they illegally erected an AI surveillance camera on school OUR property, without the school board’s permission, to surveil our students (whose parents who happen to primarily be Latino). Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was murdered five days ago midway through one of his famous debates by a sniper shooting from a nearby building. His kids and wife saw their dad, husband, eat the slug and bleed out in front of ’em.

maybe Huntington has the right idea. lets just stop basing everything on race, or sexual identity, or religion and all the things that divide us…..and just celebrate being Americans and the things that unite us.
The last black lynching was in 1981. The blacks experienced something in this country you and I can not relate to. We can include the Native Americans if you like. They probably deserve a month, museums, and taught more in education. Spoke to a German couple other day in their 60’s and they said growing up the atrocities of WWII were part of their education system to prevent it from happening again. For as many Christians in this country we sure are divided? Yes our diversity is our strength as a country we have not realized it full value.
My comment was being against said month of celebration seems suspect but I wasn’t implying you or I have to actively support anything. There is a space in between all issues where things can just exist, it’s fine and it doesn’t really affect my day to day life. If it affects your day to day life maybe you need to clarify that.

But if you’re saying having specific moments to celebrate specific groups is exclusionary maybe define your group and how you want to be celebrated?

previously in the U.S. cultural separation and racial segregation did not work out well. therefore instead of celebrating black history for a month, why not just educate people on what blacks, whites, latinos, asians, etc, have provided for America and their contribution to American society and culture? no need to carve out celebrations for every racial and gender group. I mean seriously why do we have gay pride month instead of Military Veterans month, or Constitution month, or founders month? Why is there only one day that we celebrate our independence and the founding of our nation and an entire month for celebrating ball people and gay people?
I’m Native American, and I don’t think we should have native American month. let’s celebrate our unity not what divides us?

I’ve not experienced any of these months of celebration as divisive. So I just haven’t had that experience.
I do see it on the calendar and once my kid did ask me about MLK and we talked about the civil rights movement for 10 mins on the way to the beach. Did not strike me as a big deal.
I do think giving someone something and then taking it away is going to get pretty messy and I just don’t see the point.

My point was how Americans use words.. Nordic countries sure lean that way and would be the only examples of current societies worth looking at in my opinion. Hands down lower gun violence than our Stars and Stripes. Although Nicaragua as seen in this documentary below I found quite inspiring and the vision of the people worth fighting for. Poetry is considered the highest art form in Nicaragua that’s pretty amazing and beautiful.

over the past several years there has been a significant increase in gun and gang violence in many Nordic countries. you are also looking at less than 30million population total Nordic countries compared to a population of over 340million. So many of these American shooters, whether they are currently conservative or progressive, grew up not just in gun households, but legit gun humping true believer households. So many of them social media filled with “woohoo guns” pictures of the whole family. Always tied to preset familial defensiveness fetish about rights and defending them.
So naturally, these impulsive young men see shooting people as the correct, justified response to ideological differences. They’ve been signalled their whole lives that guns are an amazing blessing ultimately meant to defend sociopolitical abstractions. And so they do that.
The other thing I’ll say is that people who are brought up in ideology, or at least in ideology at the ends of political spectrums, almost never flip to pragmatic centrism when their politics change. They go from extreme right to extreme left, or the other way around. I think it’s a bad idea to enculturate your kids in siloed, polarized political rhetoric. Sure, you might train them to “win” “arguments” consisting of hurling bumper stickers back and forth, and you’ll have some buddies with whom to luxuriate in your favorite flavor of outrage. But if they ever change their minds about political position, they’re going to end up either Proud Boys or Antifa, whichever one you don’t like.
