Mormon billionaire offloads redundant Hanalei plot for record busting price.
Whenever the Mormon billionaire Jimmy Jannard sells a property, the 210 mill he got for his Malibu compound, most expensive in town, or his brutalist lair in Bev Hills for instance, Jimmy is feted for starting the so-bad-they’re-kinda-cute sunglass brand Oakley.
And, whenever I hear of ol Jimmy Jannard in the news it always takes me back to baby Dez paying one hundred and twenty shekels for a pair of Oakley Razor Blades the gal behind the surf shop counter said he looked “fire” in and thinking if he bought the crazy lookin’ specs in turn she’d rob his semen bank.
But Jimmy ain’t just known for his wild looking glasses ‘cause it was his second biz, RED, that changed the world by democratising filmmaking: the creation of relatively affordable, wildly portable HD cameras that meant indy filmmakers could get their hands on professional-grade equipment without having to sell their soul to a studio or whatever.
Jimmy Jannard is worth a little under three billion dollars these days, is a Mormon, owns two Fijian islands, in the Lau Group, too, and if you know anything about the Lau group, oowee, empty waves for days.
And, a few days back, Jimmy Jannard sold his final beachfront property on Kauai’s North Shore for $32.25 million, slightly less than the total $36.75 million received for his other three properties, per public records.
Public records show that Extra Time LLC purchased the Weke Road property in Hanalei for $32.25 million. The buyer’s listed San Francisco address connects to Iconiq Capital, a global investment firm reportedly managing assets for wildly rich players Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Reid Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Reynolds, Henry Kravis. and James Murdoch.
Another entity tied to Iconiq Capital recently acquired two neighboring vacant lots on Weke Road for $18.12 million, adjacent to the four properties sold by Jannard. Under Kauains LLC, Jannard bought these adjacent properties in 2015 for a total of $43.5 million, with the most recently sold property costing $13.5 million, resulting in a combined profit of $25.5 million from the sale of the four properties.
Hanalei Bay, as y’know, is a two-mile stretch of white sand beach with a righthand point in its northern corner that’ll hold fifteen feet and then some. In the middle of the long crescent of sand is the beachbreak, Pine Trees, famous for turning two poor local boys, Andrew and Bruce Irons, into two of the world’s greatest surfers.
Makes me long for that long-overdue tsunami, ‘cept these emeffers would probably welcome Nature to do their dirty work to clean the slate, unlike Lahaina where they had to do it theirselves.
But Hanalei is Hanalei, she’ll be there long after everyone/thing there is dust.
A couple weeks ago I was on my couch enjoying happy hour when I saw two stark white button down shirts with ties coming up the drive. A full scrammble ensued as I raced to the door and locked it just before the pitter patter of Mormon fists started lightly knocking on the screen door.
I cannot confirm or deny purchasing knock off Oakleys “duty and tax free” on the streets of Manhattan back in the early 90s as I don’t want the Mormons coming after me for back tithings owed by Jimmy
Perfect story to keep the comments at their below 30 trend
heard Hanalei has gone donwhill due the Sarah Brady effect.
BTW-“she’d rob his semen bank” – great line
Selling land on Kaua’i is a lose lose. Buyer of over priced paradise will always be looks at by our community as a kook. The seller will never be able to replace that property. Home sweet home.
I don’t even go to Hanalei anymore when I’m on Kauai.
So Haole it doesn’t even know it’s Haole.
Hanalei haole are the worst.
Soooo fucked.
BMD all the way for this cheap a$$, Dez.
Red held the promise at the beginning and was fascinating to see the development of a camera system in real time through the internet. Red wasn’t the only game in play tho.
I do like Mormons, generally. Although, Mountain Meadows Massacre, oowee.
generally….but don’t ever get into business with them.
Funny business or biz biz?
biz biz….they’re not known for a sense of honesty in business, so “funny business” has a different connotation.
now, if you meant Mormon gal kind of funny business…that’s a different story.
Dem love dem a bit of strange.
My non-Mormon grandfather uses to say the best way to do cattle and land business with Mormons was to get the decision maker alone in a hotel or conference room with a bottle of whiskey and a contract in hand.
How do you feel about recovering ex-Mormons who lost their way?
Bye bye Kauai. She was a good one.
Oh she was the best when Bruce was the king of Princeville.
Or before

Don’t care what day it is sitting in that lineup and view.. I got a tub two blocks off my home beach, winter pricing in affect. Still have not done it! May never.. Nothing replaces the energy of paddling to the horizon over a solid set bearing down on you. Maybe turning and going!
Emery Days
