Announced a short while ago, and in response to heat in the Middle East surrounding the current imbroglio in Iran which may force the cancellation of the Abu Dhabi tank show, a Championship Tour event has been scheduled for Cloud 9 on the pretty little Philippine island of Siargao, just north of the Islamic stronghold of Mindanao.
Went to Siargao in the nineties, where I enjoyed a terrific two-weeks trying to get a flight or boat out of the joint. Twas there in August, on the cusp of typhoon season, and after two months of no waves, an air of insanity among travellers prevailed. The trip was notable, however, for introducing the Lawnmower and sprinkler dances to local school children and for a pro bodyboarder being arrested for assaulting a Philippines Airlines hostess on the flight home to Sydney.
Now, Siargao. That name ring a bell don’t it.
At the end of April, two Israeli tourists had the hell beaten out of ‘em in General Luna, the main town in Siargao, ostensibly for having a piss in the middle of the road but, likely given the response, ‘cause they were Jews.
Of the almost three hundred responses to a Facebook post about it, nearly all celebrated the attack many with inventive memes.

A lone standout among the crowd, if you’ll recall, was outspoken BeachGrit habitué John Callahan.
With the entire monocultural native Siargao Island community being raised from birth as rabid Catholics, this community has found a group of people even easier to hate than their own Mindanao Muslims – the Jews.

Now, because the Siargao event falls in that cutoff part of the season, the post-season, where the field reduces to 24 men and 16 gals, Israeli’s first Championship Tour surfer Anat Lelio may not make the cut, she’s currently seventeenth.
But, if she do, what sorta welcome do you think she’ll receive?
Will she be forced to hide her nationality and flag, as she did in Morocco, or will the Degel Yisrael be proudly screenprinted on Anat’s jersey?
