Creating pretty blue-water tubes in the desert heart of Coachella, right there in Palm Desert, ain’t cheap as surfers are discovering after the opening of DSRT Surf today.
You’ll find the five-and-a-half acre Wavegarden tank, bigger than Sydney, smaller than Seoul, right there at the Desert Willow Golf Resort at 105 Wave Drive or a ten-minute from the El Paseo strip.
Early reports are wildly favourable although this isn’t unusual when influencers are gifted something for free.
The active San Diego surfer and popular conservative influencer Jonathan Wayne Freeman, whose work you’ve enjoyed here, here, here and here, oh and here too, is less impressed citing the $370 tariff to ride the little barrels for an hour with fifteen other surfers.
Freeman, whose much-loved account has accumulated 163,000 followers and who self-describes as “an elite-level surfer if you’re looking at 40-year-old men in North County San Diego who surf twice a week between the North and South jetties” writes:

Four c-notes for an hour riding a Wavegarden does, to me, seem a little rich although these things are expensive as all hell to build and keeping ’em open requires investors to place a lot of faith in the gods.
Still, it ain’t even close to being as expensive as the SlaterAbu Dhabi tank. That’ll hit you for a thou’ for ninety minutes.
A decade ago, I predicted that, by now, we’d be seeing pools everywhere, and that in the next ten years, most of ’em would close.

The only thing stopping me from making the 4+hr round trip drive this weekend is the lack of a reduced or discounted rate for a second or third session.
By the time you add in gas and food you’re looking at 1k for a day trip.
Why you would miss out on the opportunity for a post wave pool beer while being hunted and hit on by the local wildlife is beyond me. The Palm Springs wildlife always delivers entertainment.
But of greater importance we must remain patient while our BG messiahs work out their technical difficulties. I guess I’ll head over to FT.com and bash the EU/UK minions while the boys work this out….
At least with PSSC you can enjoy the left and the right (on adv. A-Frame) for an hour. DSRT costs more and I have to choose to either bograil backside or bograil frontside for an hour. No thanks.
