Feminist who cheered Nova massacre shames surf icon with decade-old screenshot of private message

"Certain women are choosing the moment to tar and feather the stone cold wrong people. Play Misty For Me meets To Kill A Mockingbird."

Hell hath no fury like the grievance farmer and recent revelations of what may, or may not, be a sexual assault in Tahiti, have seen the mobs descend with a vengeance not seen, I think safe to say, since Titus besieged the Jews at Jerusalem.

And like all pitchhfork raisings, in the great sweep, it ain’t just the guilty set ablaze.

The surf feminist Lucy Small is well-known on these pages. First, for campaigning for equal prizemoney for women then trans-rights-in-sports, followed by a real hard pivot into the liberation of Arabstrapped under the jackboot of the Jewish ethnostate, cheering the murder of 378 of her fellow Gen Z’ers at the Supernova music festival on October 7, 2023.

Read about Lucy Small, here, here, here, here, here and here.

Recently, she posted a screenshot from 2016 of a message from the iconic surf writer, former pro surfer, creator of Rip Curl’s The Search campaign and fins-free pioneer, Derek Hynd.

Screenshot

The preamble:

“Ten years ago, when I was 22, I wanted to go to Angola and write an article. I talked to an editor about it and they suggested I ask Derek Hynd, who was quite a big surf writer in his late 50s at the time, if he might be keen to come and collaborate. This is how he responded when I asked him:”

And the message from ten years ago.

Screenshot

“I can do that, introduce. You’d want to be in a secure place though I guess. Let me make some enquiries ok. Could take a few days as my pal is in Israel atm. Me, come? On two fronts, umm, no. First, too too too hot. I’m kind of a cool weather person. Second, sexual tension, pure and simple. I’d want to sleep with you, alot, and to be in such a heated, wet climate, unbearable. Just thinking about it now makes me unsettled! Not sure if that’s good or bad but I like your style Lucy. I’m sure you’ve got layers to you that are pretty incredible. There said it. Ha ha.”

Hynd who is now sixty-nine, had been the first major surf industry figure to stick his head above the parapet after the alleged assault in Tahiti, describing itas surfing’s “Watergate”. He wrote that it was “potentially if not already, the most damaging incident in the history of competitive surfing be it amateur or professional.”

He subsequently appeared at a demonstration against gendered violence in surfing culture at The Pass in Byron Bay. The demo, led by Margaret River surfer Ruby Southwell, was to “show people what the community stands for and that we demand a better future for young girls in the surf.”

Derek Hynd gave a short speech at the demo talking about “women’s legal rights in the water at The Pass” that so infuriated the organiser Ruby Southwell, she wrote him a very long and scalding letter stating in part,

“This was an event dedicated to raising awareness of, and bringing an end to, harmful behaviour towards women and girls in surfing. Yet, in that very space, I found myself experiencing behaviour from a man that was controlling, intimidating and dismissive of my right to say no.

“You cannot advocate for the safety, empowerment and respect of women and girls while simultaneously disregarding a woman’s boundaries, autonomy and voice.

“I am raising this directly with you because I believe accountability matters, particularly from people who position themselves as advocates for change.

“I would like you to reflect seriously on your actions, the impact they had on me and others, and the example they set at an event where respect and safety should have been paramount.

“What I want to know is whether you recognise the harm in your behaviour, and what you intend to do to take responsibility for it.”

He replied in part,

“Do you comprehend how distraught I have been every day about the Tahitian Incident in relation to my bank of knowledge spanning 25 years embedded on Tour as surfer, coach, writer, anti-drugs campaigner and breakaway Tour organizer (with Jack McCoy and Kelly Slater)? We sought to change the runaway cocaine culture but failed in 2001.”

Can’t win for losing, eh?

Derek was classic when I asked him about it all: the wild letter from Ruby and the private message screenshot and thrown on Instagram which, as you’ll read a lil later, might’ve been the work of a hacker.

Man oh manOSPHERRE. Tell you what, it is as if the Tahitian Incident is spilling over with certain women choosing the moment to tar and feather the stone cold wrong people. Play Misty For Me meets To Kill A Mockingbird. Would have been Lord’s Cricket I would have thought to focus attention on the Femmosphere of the WSL masthead, at least three up here making the stonewalling decisions.

But I digress.

THIS is what I get for being a male of goodwill making a speech about women’s legal rights in the water at The Pass. I did not realize that it was a closed shop after helping organize support for it. No More Excuses is what the protest was about, and I was certain that it was about No More Excuses for bad lineup behaviour at The Pass!! To my surprise it had morphed into a male on female general domestic violence/intimidation protest.

Well, enter Ms Small. Did not know she and Lucy were tight, did not know she shared my apologetic letter with her. DID NOT KNOW Ms SMALL HAD ALREADY BEEN SHARING YEAR OLD PRIVATE MATERIAL. I was sincerely apologetic to Lucy for any harm I had caused during the protest – lengthy letter.

Anyway, get set, because not only did Lucy apparently NOT appreciate my apology in which I explained that since being treated for new cancer Category 5, I am a definitively better man. Nup not our Lucy. Got an email from a Daily Mail senior writer saying she was a piece on me so I wrote her a lengthy explanation but have zero idea about her own angle.

I mean, on this day of days when thing bloke in London has been found guilty of multiple rapes, Lucy appears to have taken the opportunity to slander me up to my neck. That snippet message she flooded the NET with was upon recollection part of a string of talks about what she was up to in Mozam and why she was there and whether I had contacts to help her out up there from J-Bay or Capetown. Pretty sure I was in J-Bay. She invited me up there (important). I declined (important) but certainly did not expect her to keep the thread going after I told her that I did not like hot weather and then the bit I’d written to have her leave me be.

I’ve always liked my own space, period.

Here I sit tonight awaiting the Daily Mail ripping in: all down to this woman’s questionable compulsive politics. I’m getting pretty dang upset and I believe for good reason. Christ, I’m blazing a bloody trail for female lineup rights at one of the worst spots on Earth to experience herd mentality and this is the manosphere payback.

But, still, these are wild new times. How do you respond to the specific charge about flirting inappropriately as they say, age diff etc?

The charge holds reasonable water but I have no conversation thread to go off and I certainly do not believe I was on Insta back then. Age difference as well holds reasonable water though the woman was at the time well into  her 20’s and a world traveller as far as I know.

Again, I’d want to see  the entire conversation thread. A mea culpa would be based on it. I wrote quick words intending to close down the exchange. Certainly I should not have sent them in the form I did. It was impolite, impulsive, and I am full of regret.

His reply to the Daily Mail reporter bears reading too,

Dear Jonica,

Respectfully, you have me at a disadvantage here as I do not know how you sourced the material, or sources, or the absolute legality of said source or sources, or whether or not I am to be somehow portrayed in similar light as the utter beasts who have apparently perpetrated such major crime as the send WSL surfing into total media lockdown.

I am about to be most candid with you, a stranger, with honest hope attached.

I do not know the fine legalities of Ms Small apparently only publishing one part of a string of private messages let alone with no warning, having not been in touch with the woman for many years. I note that on this day a U.K case has concluded in which a serial rapist of highest media profile now awaits sentence. It is outrageous to even imagine the thought of being portrayed in similar light when my character is not anything of the sort.

I am a somewhat fabled anti-drugs campaigner on The World Surfing Tour from an era in which to not take drugs was the uncommon exception. I have never smoked, never taken drugs, and have been a basic teatotaller since age 40. I have been, proudly, the enemy of surfing’s dark side all my career.

Ms Small to her credit has developed into the singularly most impressive womens’ rights campaigner in the sport of surfing. I congratulate her. I provided a sincere and detailed apology to Ms Small three days back relating to the matter. Without warning of any sort she had chosen to simply toss part of an electronic string out there, following my attendance a a female rights protest last Sunday. She was not at the protest. I did not know if she was even in the country. I was at this protest for reason – I helped to organize it. I repeat, that I helped organize it. No More Excuses married with the protest myself and Brazilian surfing pioneer Roberta Beltrao literally drew up to run well beyond the one off No More Excuses Byron Bay circle of protest.

The movement created by Roberta and myself is called Line In The Sand. Photo included, marked out that morning by Roberta at the Byron Bay Pass boat ramp. I am the only noted male surfer that I know of on the planet dedicated enough to publicly voice to any child under 15 and any woman in the perpetually crowded and atrociously behaved lineup that ANY wave I ride is open to ANY of them no matter the quality of wave. I rarely surf any other wave. This has been my position for two full years – again, always voiced to women and kids in any surf.

I explained by email to Ms Small that I am a recent multiple cancer survivor including Category 5.
I explained that facing the instant of that news keys a force like no other, strangely positive.
I remain a highly regarded friend to the great Jodie Cooper to whom I had the honour of coaching on the ASP from 1984 to 1989.
I have testaments as to my good and true character from many a great of the past 50 years of professional surfing.
Should you take time to look up my recent facebook activity you will be aware of my pointed defense of women in surfing including the development of Line In The Sand, which I intend making a global initiative, so simply executed by anyone, female or male, on any beach before paddling out, that it sends a legal message with the law in support. Line In The Sand will outstrip Sunday’s protest for ongoing impact.

I attended No More Excuses because I was invited by Pauline Menczer and partner Sam Endel.
I categorically did not know that Ruby Southwell had organized it.
I was under the impression that Sam had told Pauline about my own Line In The Sand protest idea and that No More Excuses had come of it.
I categorically did not realize that there was a prearranged list of speakers, the group of which was huddled under the tent that I also helped organize.
Ruby spoke first, forcefully into a microphone not holding back anything including usage of the F Bomb.
Wow, I thought, go Ruby.
She was very well received.
Others spoke and spoke well and spoke truly,
As their speeches ended I approached Ruby and asked to say a few words and said that I did not need a microphone and would be quick.
I spoke no more forcefully than Ruby, pointing out that a once off circle at Byron sent a once off message but that the simplicity of every surfer drawing a line in the sand before any surf delivered legal protection against perceived intimidation. It drew applause.
I knew I was rushed so I finished with a message to men who were there, saying to use the Johnny Cash lyric I WALK THE LINE
as encouragement to also draw in support whenever about to surf.

I did not participate in the circle.
I no longer ride a surfboard out of environmental pollutant concerns plus had a torn hip flexor and was on the hobble at the time.
If you’ve got this far, Jonica, know that I came in for criticism from Ms Small when mentioning the effect that my words had on famed men in attendance.
No women, was her comment, as if I only sought out males, but at this time people were dashing to the sea.

Beau Young, son of Nat Young, described feeling shivers at the positive nature of my idea, particularly in the face of his at times flawed father.
David Rastovich, arguably the greatest soul surfer in surfing history and environmental warrior, was completely blown out in that, as I spoke
about Line In The Sand, in serendipity he described actually drawing a subconscious line himself.
James McMillan, well known surfing artist, author, and the Byron Bay Surf Festival founder, said spoken with force to the point.

It is worth noting, if you will in reminder, that Ms Small and I were exchanging several messages way back. With both of us in different parts of Africa, Ms Small invited me to the particular country that she was in. I declined the invitation in wording that I am not proud of, obviously. However, I did not wish to pursue HER invitation further, and consequently certainly did not. I find it interesting at this time that a follow up email exchange between us in the past days mentions episodes involving other women. I am baffled to know the source of her accusation for I only know of one. In approximately 2014 my computer was stolen in a sting by a then close friend who quickly hacked for information involving a mutual female friend to us both out of spite and thus emailed her material that he thought would undermine a then year long intimate relationship. It did not. We continued our close relationship, travelling internationally, until she had to return to her scientific profession. We parted the best of friends and exchange birthday and Xmas greetings to this year.

Given that the offending gentleman is himself very well known in the surfing world, there is the chance that Ms Small has fished and received hacked material. If so, complicity in international wire fraud has become involved, and I will, in no uncertain terms, even though I greatly respect the good fight conducted by The Daily Mail, not only contact Interpol but sue all involved parties if not pursue criminal action on several fronts.

I am a solo parent. I avoid one night stands, I am not a serial pest. Over my entire career I have predominantly kept to myself.

All this said in the spirit of goodwill, should you want a far greater source of story regarding detail that has not come close to being made public about the alleged gang surfing rape in Tahiti, do not hesitate to contact me.

“but Rasta and Beau said I’m a good guy. Plus I am single parent with cancer”.. Pathetic DH. Pathetic and rightfully scared.

Corey Webster

Anyone watch an episode of the 80’s hit show Cheers lately? The inappropriateness of guys hitting on the female staff is wild. Actually kind of hard to watch. The women’s ability to swiftly shut the guys down is great though. The movie 9 to 5 is another great example of this. Dolly Parton draws boundaries like an A list gunslinger. But obviously real life people aren’t gifted with screen writers to come up with quick witty defenses that shut down perpetrators so swiftly. Real life perpetrators aren’t as easy going and easily thwarted too. Anyway, coming out of that era and culture Derek’s response to Lucy, seems relatively self aware even if it is off putting, inappropriate, or offensive. He’s seems to be on the edge of grasping that, admitting his lack of awareness. So Derek crossed an inappropriate work boundary before establishing his own boundary? Ok. Interesting to see the mob jump in with virtue signaling support and appropriate disdain in Lucy’s comments. Everyone’s so many eager to throw their stones at Derek. One thing is for sure, they are all more virtuous and pure than Derek. So as the stones fly Derek… Remember, Jesus isn’t going to save you in this earthly realm.

JUST WOW! Derek as much as I enjoy the debauchery BG offers up to soften my daily life, THIS is a top shelf thought provoking and sobering offering. As always, a great piece to contemplate today’s social dynamics.

Good o’l “Hynd’s Missing Laptop!” Roaming one eyed in the root cellar thinking he was peeling the layers to a sweet sweet onion has its dangers..

Fucking hell, Lucy. You were 22. An old man sent flirtatious texts that went nowhere, that had no threat of going anywhere, 10 years ago. The tar and feather factory is ramping up production, and for what? You think it’s new that men (and women) like to/want to have sex? I am in no way supporting creeps being creepy, but this ain’t a crime.

NEGATRON

Don’t think anyone is saying it’s a crime.
But you are supporting creeps being creepy. “Just an old man sending a flirty text” fuck that, it was totally unnecessary and creepy.

This is the perfect example of someone lying down with the dogs and catching fleas. And then being surprised.

Did Mr. Hynd not understand the bloodthirsty company he was keeping? The dopamine rush they get from their perpetual outrage? The fact they are always on the hunt for the next trophy kill who deliciously might be one of their own?

Simply the fact he is male, straight, and white has him being viewed with suspicion in the circle he chose to collaborate with.

Congrats, Mr. Hynd…today you are the trophy kill held high by Lucy and her/your compatriots can now showcase their outrage and moral superiority… based on something you chose to put into written word a decade ago of which Lucy saved a snippet for a rainy day. Just in case she’d ever need it. (That’s what normal, mentally stable people do, right? Save stuff for a decade in case they can use to make a kill?)

Truth be told she probably saw Litmus and was miffed about your words regarding feminism. Of course some 30 years later, you could always claim you’ve changed your views, so it wasn’t worth her trouble to “expose” you.

But since the internet (including BeachGrit commenters) are now on the hunt for all the unapologetic rapists in the “surf industry” (surfing is particularly rapey, they say!)…and you were on her rainy day hitlist… this was her moment to strike.

“If we don’t laugh, we’ll cry”

Ethan’s Silverback butt

I was surfing Red Bluff in August and Ruby happened to be out there. it was pretty solid and she kept giving me and others the stink eye, as she felt she deserved more waves or something. I didn’t recognise her at first, she has put on a far bit of weight and was riding a banged up lost sponsorless fish. A far cry from her “Mentawai village-life” days. Anyways, I didn’t see her make a single wave that session on her backhand and then had a go at my mate for apparently dropping in on her. She had a total crabby, entitled vibe about her. It’s always the C-grade almost pro surfers that are like this.

JSC

Riding a Fish on her backhand at Red Bluff?

Wrong choice of surfboards, for one thing –

At least she actually surfs unlike you.

DR–any chance DH can write a monthly column on good ol BG?

Barnycle

Did you not read his letter to Derek? Please spare us.

he has 40 years of archived writing that you can go back and read. If BG is going to be paying any writer then it should be that talented bloke over at SN, or give some upstart a chance.

Also, I already treat women in the lineup with respect, and have told a few that they can take any wave that I’m paddling for, or am riding, so I don’t need someone coming here telling me to draw a line in the sand before every surf session. This is not an activist’s space.

Fucken oath mate

Chief Hot stuff

Or am riding?

Taddy Mason

I’ve seen two very different approaches to the horrible situation in Tahiti on social media.

Some are in it to help others and others are in it to help themselves.

JSC

The plot thickens –

DH was completely off-base about Angola, not hot and sweaty at all but rather cool due to the influence of the Benguela Current.

Anyway, why make sexual comments to Lucy Small who is a Jew-hating, delusional pro -“Palestine” lesbian longboarder.

If Lucy wants advice about where to go surfing when to go there, she should be asking moi, not DH.

Taddy Mason

Genuine question, if someone is “pro-palestine”, does that mean they ‘hate’ jews?

Brutus

try are pro-Palestine people , Pro Hamas?

Taddy Mason

Either way, I’m pretty far removed from this situation but it seems to be a case of absolutes

Brutus

it’s a long history of 5000 years plus….not sure if you can be pro-Palestine and anti-Hamas…as Hamas is still the legal Govt in Gaza!

Formerly Low wide stinkbug stance

Obviously not.

Brutus

I know quite a few people who hate Israel/Jews because of Gaza……and support Hamas…..hmmmmm

JSC

Yes – there is no reason for supporting the ficticous entity of “Palestine” other than a hatred of Jewish people and a wish to see the destruction of the State of Israel.

“Palestine” is not a country, has never been a country in more than 3000 years of recorded history and will never be a country.

There was no support for the establishment of a separate country called “Palestine” UNTIL the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

M.

Easy there, semen cunt, easy. People are just not as excited about genocide and apartheid as you are. Let alone paying for it with their taxes. Nobody on here (besides you weirdos) gives two fucks whether the dirt below the blood and tears is called Israel or Palestine.

Brutus

yet the World is gathered around Jerusalem from Jews/Christians/Muslims etc….so why worry about anything in the ME…?? Israel has only about 5m jews…..so what’s all the drama about?

Formerly Low wide stinkbug stance

Ok maestro, when did you go to Angola?

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

Like Rasta, he heard about the country and went there subconsciously:
David Rastovich, arguably the greatest soul surfer in surfing history and environmental warrior, was completely blown out in that, as I spoke  about Line In The Sand, in serendipity he described actually drawing a subconscious line himself.

Brutus

best sould surfer in History is Margo , not Rasta…even Rast said in a recent interview if he could be any surfer who would he be…Margo…the First paid Soul surfer!

JSC

It’s a big chapter in my book, surfEXPLORE: Discovering New Surfing Locations Worldwide from Schiffer Publishing

You can see a gallery of published materials from Angola at this link –

Don’t need your book mate. I work in Angola and have been for about 20 years. And there was a well established, but small, surf scene already going when I got there. Country had been explored by expat rig pigs since the 70s when oil was first found, and that doesn’t even include the saffas heading north even earlier.

You didn’t find any point breaks that’s for sure, they are right there on the map.

When did you go there? Maybe I even met you.
