It’s raining bebes for the 11-time king of the surf world, the ageless and indefatigable Kelly Slater: two freshies with long-time Chinese girlfriend Kalani Miller, Tao Druku and Azumi Moon, and a thirty-year-old, Taylor, with Floridian ex Tamara Mitchell.
(Back in 1996, Tamara Michelle gave birth to Taylor in Slater’s home town, Cocoa Beach, Florida, where she was raised. In a country famous for its tell-alls, it spoke well of Tamara, Kelly and Taylor that, despite media pressure, none of ’em spoke of their lives, although Slater did talk briefly, about the guilt he felt for not being a “full-time Dad.”
“The whole time my daughter has been raised by her mother almost 100 percent in physical time and I’ve been traveling,” Slater told Graham Bensinger. “The hardest part, I think for me, is my daughter feeling like she doesn’t have a dad there all the time. And that’s hard for her. I know it was especially hard for her when she was younger.”)
And raining bebes because Taylor, a noted painter and photographer, is set to give birth thereby transforming surf god Kelly Slater into a grandpappy. Kelly Slater made the announcement on the Gracie Kramer podcast Athletes After Hours. No word yet on the name, if already chosen, although Baby Dez is a popular and much-loved handle for babies following John John Florence’s lil son.
Interestingly, Slater doesn’t dwell on the matter of becoming a grandpappy, one of the finest heights a man can reach, I think, and further proof of a life lived well and full etc.

Saw him all around Byron, especially the Wreck, early 90’s tearing the shit out of it. Absolute style king.
Would have been fun to watch him at the Wreck, with the elevated viewing position. Never got to surf it, but one day we got Main Beach (directly in front of, and to the right of, the car park very good. Think it was the beginning of a cyclone swell that we drove up to the Goldy to surf the following day.
Sand was insane there those years, rights only though. Slept in a tent right in front of the Wreck for weeks couple different times. Main beach was weird, Broken and Tallows had super good sand as well.

For real, brother. My jealousy runs deep. Surfers with half his talent and skill have blown my mind in the water before. I can only imagine the joy you got surfing alongside him.
I watched the first half of Billabong Framelines (2002) tonight which I see as the definitive, post-2000 Margo film. It’s my favourite nostalgia surf film, and I think a template for what people think of when they think of top-tier films from that era. One year before Andy elevated himself to the top of the heap, as he was just another noted member of a stacked surf team. Such a moody surf film, with Margo front and centre.
Have you ever seen Pulse? It’s the Aussie equivalent of Momentum. I think it’s a way better film really. Better music. Margo went next level with that flick.

I never got to see the full, original film but I used to use instagram and I followed the lad. So I got to see some of the best 60 second clips.

Found Margo’s section from Pulse. You’ve got no idea how impactful this was on Oz surfers at the time. And still today. Those turns at Iluka are full on. Such a powerful wave for East coast and he just manhandles it.

The best surfing I’ve ever seen was by Shaun Cansdell at Crescent Head if you can believe. Pure surfing covering all bases. Utterly flawless flow and transition, radical progression and the most perfect rail work you can imagine.
He’d take off on these semi-chubby 4-6 ft walls and seamlessly stitch together hundreds of metres of impeccable backhand surfing. Massive lip blasts from deep, deep behind sections. Huge helicopter airs. Vertical foam climbs and ultra extended bottom turns like he was steering a powerboat. All without a single wobble or loss of speed on these imperfect waves. He made it look like the best surf you’ve ever seen only to have the surfers on the following waves reminfd you how average the break actually is.
Most surfers power into the lip.Like Occy, Cansdell was powering out of the lip. Plumes of vertical spray framing every hit.
Flow is the intangible that often gets overlooked when discussing great surfing. Candsdell that day was surfing like he was under a spell. Literal perfection.
Then I saw him another time at one of Oz’s best left reefs getting schooled by an unsponsored local. That day at Crescent was otherworldly. Wonder if he remembers it?

There’s a wave where I live that is about as sharky as waves get. One day it was pumping but the ocean was brown with floodwater and entry to the wave is by letting a literal river drag you the kilometre or so out to the back of the lineup. You’re not the only thing in that river flow after a big storm. There’s also dead cows, tree trunks and all kinds of unpleasant shit….some of which has lots and lots of teeth.
I was about to do the long, lonely paddle on my own when I noticed someone already at the water’s edge doing a very obvious job of procrastinating his entry until I got there. Turns out it was Shaun Cansdell. We paddled out. He ripped. Neither of us got eaten by a shark or had our heads stoved in by an errant log.
