No Twinkies. No Ho Hos.
But do you have a sweet tooth? A deep craving for cakes and candies, pies and profiteroles? I, myself, don’t. Dessert is fine, every now and again, but I much prefer savory to syrupy and, thus, I would make a good child for the world’s winningest surfer Kelly Slater.
The age-defying 54-year-old is no longer on the professional surfing tour full-time, of course, but he is still very much in the public eye what with his hot takes on Instagram and his healthy lifestyle choices. Slater recently sat down with Men’s Journal in order to talk about how he keeps fit. Some secrets to his success are taking vitamins that his girlfriend lays out for him each morning, getting many Thai massages and lifting his body weight. The 11-time world champion also discussed tips for raising children.
“Yeah, I mean, I have two young kids now,” Slater explained to the interviewer, continuing, “I also have a 30-year-old daughter. I’m about to be a grandpa in a couple of months, right before my uh 55th birthday. I’ll be a grandpa for the first time. But especially with the kids, my girlfriend and I have really made a big effort to get them all the nutrition they need. We cook basically every single meal, and we don’t want them to have any sugar at all, at least till they’re like three years old.”
No sugar until three. Do you imagine, post-three, the youngsters will have minds blown by Twinkies and Ho Hos or do you think that they will be sugar VALs, never getting dessert quite right?
In other news, when asked about what’s “blowing him away” in the surf world, he shared, “I would say that the Brazilians have really stood out from the crowd in the last 10 years or even more now. They’re not called the Brazilian storm for nothing, and they’ve ruled the surf world for the last generation. And John John Florence is kind of the only other guy who’s jumped in there and gotten a world title during that time. There’s a few guys who are really good: Griffin Colapinto and Ethan Ewing and stuff. But none have been able to pull a world title away from those guys [Brazilians] yet. And so it’s been really impressive what the Brazilians have done.”
Not even any shade.
Or sugar.

My neighbours honey
Sweet, but also good for your health.
Get with the program Ke11ster, you can’t just live on bone broth and salad…
I’m not much of a sweet tooth either Chaster, but presumably Ke11ster is talking about refined sugar, cos surely some natural raw dark honey like the stuff a bloke up the road from me gets from his bee’s that fly around the local bush getting all sorts of native tree flowers is good for growing children as well as wizened old blokes…
Yeah Kelly you tell em.
If they don’t eat their meat they can’t have any pudding!
I mean how can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?
The key to avoiding sweet desserts is to have 2 to 3 rums after every meal. To be drank with water; in order to make it a health drink.
Within a couple of years you’ll find yourself never craving anything sweet, as long as you take the rum regularly and consistently. Now you know.
Is this really necessary, not the best way I want to start my day to starting reading about KS and desserts.
(Listening to JSC‘s rants about naming cloud 9 last week was bad enough)..
It’s actually some of the best life advice you’ll ever receive. Sugar ( in a modern context ) is poison.
And you heard it on Beachgrit!
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good?
You don’t want to complete the lyrics to this one, as it might get screenshots by Lucy Small and used against you one day..
