Luke Cederman reigns supreme.
We exist in the golden age of surf comedy. In years’ past, the best we were ever served came as generally not overly amusing skits folded into surf film. Surfers missing timing while trying too hard. Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson’s Greasy and Lemmy in Doped Youth a classic bit of nope. Not even Ben Stiller, in Fair Bits, could elevate the surf comedy genre to acceptable levels of ha.
Surf comedy ranging from “I kind of see what you were going for” to “please stop.”
Well, that was then and this is now. Easily accessible editing software plus high-definition cameras that fit in pockets, the democratization of platform via social media etc. have allowed for surfers, who also happen to be funny, to rise and shine.
Sterling Spencer, The Green Room Times, Chad and JT, Willem Powerfish plus many others producing snort-out-loud pieces of comedy daily, though there is now an official “best” amongst them and he just won the Lifetime Achievement Award in Surf Comedy at the prestigious Florida Surf Film Festival.
New Zealand’s Luke Cederman, who calls Raglan home, is undeniably hilarious, his craft becoming sharper and sharper with each passing cycle. His blend of dry humor, ability to stay in character, angles and insight vaulted the husky boy to the top of the pile
Cederman’s finer moments, including dropping in on unsuspecting surfers whilst wearing equine winkers, teaching the also funny McKenzie Bowden how to be a sexy surf influencer, etc. were presented at the just-wrapped two day affair, the Daytona Beach audience holding stomachs, gasping for air. Before, though, Luke took the stage with the festival’s co-founder John Brooks in order to answer some questions about his inspirations and whatnot.
The event is family friendly and so Brooks took a few moments to explain that there would be some salty language on offer. Cederman explained some differences between how swears are used in New Zealand and America and some pre-teen boys sitting in the front row must have chuckled or some such. Cederman, pointing to them, gave them the floor. “Now is your chance. Say whatever bad word you’d like and as loud as you’d like.”
The children stayed silent and so he called them “a bunch of little pussies.”
Pure surf comedy gold.

To each there own. Me… I could watch Yago surf all day long. Style, power, balls, and technically savy. Always a level of unpredictability on the wave. Always smiling. Soft spoken. Guy has it all.
He’s great no doubt, but the competition is thin…paper thin.

I think the venue superior in terms of film showing but back to Smyrna now! That was the last for ol Daytona.
