“Had the big sails up! Making nice speeds. Day one done! 264 miles, average speed 11mph, top speed 22mph”
Readers of yesterday’s despatch from BeachGrit may’ve noted, given the headline and the copy contained within the story, that the John John Florence-owned sailboat Vela, formerly Falcor, currently piloted by all three Florence bros, was headed from Vanuatu to the island of Oahu, three thousand nautical miles to the north-east.
Well, it appears the Vela is actually going to Australia, despite earlier indications, or let’s face it…presumptions… that the Vela was headed back to its home port Haleiwa, a short drive from the Florence family’s beachfront compounds.
A series of stories on John John Florence’s Instagram account, with its two million followers, showed the altered trajectory.
And, as online sleuths were quick to point out yesterday’s message read, “Goodbye Vanuatu. Australia here we come” and not “Oahu here we come.
“Clear skies and nice wind. Had the big sails up!” writes John John Florence. “Making nice speeds. Day one done! 264 miles. Average speed 11 mph. Top speed 22 mph.”

At the current average speed, the Florences expect to make landfall on Queensland’s Gold Coast late in the week, as early as Friday if wind and weather holds.
For readers fretting about the triple world champ’s safety, although let’s be frank, we adore the little one Ivan the most with Nathan a very distant third, the Vela is a castle on the sea.
It has three “queen berths” (everyone’s a queen at sea), one thousand feet of sail area and a main saloon where all sorts of naughty and dangerous activities often take place at sea.
This ain’t no cheap boat with narrow cots and a large mirror shard on top of a steamer trunk and some taped-up magazine pictures on the wall.
A fine vessel built for adventurous trans-Pacific voyages.
More as it comes.
Meanwhile, Nathan’s latest dispatch from the South Pac.
derek notorious for blowing up peoples lives whether on land or sea. let this man live his life without blowing up his location…
Probably unbeknownst to the not so seaworthy are these pesky little things called wheel watches. They mostly happen all through the night as someone obviously needs to be awake and present at all times. Depending on how many on board, they can a one hour piss break or a three hour sleep deprivation battle.
No and yes
I’ll stick the kettle on then.
Does anyone know what kind of biscuits they like?
I’ll pop down to the shop before they get here.
They need to make it home for the Florence Pipe Pro by Dec 10th…
Why we’re all here, absolute gold Derek

Hawaii you ask?
Becaustralia is a better sail!
Looking like they might be making some stops along the way. Vela is currently sitting a short distance from here, -21.860706, 159.540718 , tracking straight at it. https://www.vesselfinder.com/?mmsi=368268480
Coming for the milkybars. 18 aussie pesos in aldi.
Drop off mom and the bebe in Oz, provision the boat, head up the Australian coast, island hop into the equatorial current or head to Micronesia and point to Hawaii using the prevailing NW winds.
Or maybe light it on fire to collect the insurance money.
Special delivery a hull full of cocaine..
Ain’t no mom or bebe on that boat. I’d be guessing they are headed for the GBR for a bit to look around, leave the boat up there with Knutson for awhile. After winter season on the North Shore, head back over to the boat, hit some off season in Maluku, then over to the other side for the Indo season. Then turn around and slowly do it all in reverse again.
Or maybe a full circumnavigation, leaving the boat tended at various ports along the way?
Hard to see that thing going near Africa or up through the Red Sea. No waves worth the kind of trip where your life becomes subject to much more than the forces of nature.
Yeah that’s no 3 hour tour that’s for sure.
“Ain’t no mom or bebe on that boat”
then who’s making the sandwiches?
Probably Knutson. 🤣
All three are jackin’ it and making fast pace! Hawwwwt.
Brothers with benefits.
Xox
Breaking News: Ivan has just spoken his 12th word of the trip.
Previously on Ivan…
Ivan a know what happened.
Nathan really… just the brothers John’n around trying to get Ivan with each other.
Soo easy to see in Florence-sight.
I sailed across the Pacific with a French dude- complete fruity nut who thought he was a high priestess.
He refused to eat spam and got pretty scurvacious.
he drank all the rum
whilst bleeding from gums
and then became rather pugnacious
