Bondi terror attack
Love ain't gonna end hate; brave men will.

A rebuttal to Arabist surf journalist Chas Smith

"Naivety will not protect us from the fury of our descendants."

Chas Smith’s firsthand experience of the Middle East is impressive. However, he failed to answer any of the questions I raised about the violent behaviour of radicalised Muslims.

I’ve had great experiences in Muslim countries. But some awful ones, too.

My favourite time with Muslim men was getting to know the Javanese workers in G-Land, in the mid-80s. Chilling out with these guys in the jungle was one of the most pleasant experiences of my life. We became lifelong friends.

But not all Muslims are chill, as I discovered in 1988, labouring on a building site in Stepney, in the Tower Hamlets of the East End of London.

The local Cockneys were pissed off that some Muslims were not assimilating into British society. I suggested to a workmate that they stop calling them “Pakkies”, as it was disrespectful. “I’ll stop callin’ them Pakkies when they stop roaming around like packs of wolves and rapin’ our little sisters,” he defended himself.

It was the early days of the Grooming Gang Scandal. Afraid of being accused of racism, the government and police force did almost nothing over the next forty years, as tens of thousands of young women were gang raped and even murdered.

When I returned to East Java in 2004, working alone on a documentary about the 10-year anniversary of the tsunami, I got stuck for a couple of hours with some stridently militant young men in Banyuwangi.

TSUNAMI BROTHERS 1994 REUNION 2019

These guys were so suspicious of me that they rifled through my bags and, finding a business card from an AAP news correspondent I’d met in Bolivia, accused me of being him. Fortunately, my translator arrived and got me out of that precarious situation.

And not a moment too soon, it seems.

After ringing his friend at the hotel later, he discovered that the young men were members of JI, Jemaah Islamiyah, the terrorist organisation that took responsibility for the 2002 Bali bombings.

The Bali Bombings were a series of terrorist attacks two years earlier, on 12 October 2002, in the tourist district of Kuta. The attacks killed 202 innocent people, including 88 Australians and 38 local Indonesians, and injured a further 209, making it the worst terrorist act in Indonesia’s history.

On my way home, I visited the bombing memorial to put flowers under the name of Chloe Byron, a Bondi girl whose father, Big Wave Dave, told me how he searched through the smouldering ruins of the Sari Club, climbing over dead bodies, until he found Chloe’s remains. She was in five pieces.

A year later, in 2005, leading up to the Cronulla riots, a few of my Cronulla friends told me about the gangs of young “men of Middle Eastern Appearance”, who were not only harassing their sisters and girlfriends, but were also beating up anyone who stood up for them, even if it was five against one.

To use the parlance of the Wokeraty; “What happened in Cronulla didn’t happen in a vacuum.”

Aussies think bashing an outnumbered man is almost as vile as spitting on a woman. As horrible and inexcusable as the riots were, it’s understandable. That is, if men still feel compelled to protect women.

More recently, while living in Bondi, my home beach, now the site of the second-largest pogrom since the Holocaust, my Jewish girlfriend and I, both lovers of Lebanese food, went to Lakemba to indulge in their culinary delights. That is, until a group of young men started glaring at us in the restaurant.

While my girlfriend, who was blissfully unaware of the rising temperature, was in the toilet, one of the men asked if she was Jewish.

“Mate, we’ve finished our lunch and are just about to go home.” I said, hoping to avoid further friction. On our way home, I wondered what the word home now meant.

Obviously not what it used to mean.

Nobody but a Jew can know the actual fear they experience, much to the delight of their enemies. Just like how we in the West have no idea how the Arab mind works.

How could we? To acknowledge this is not racist. It’s reality. Needless to say, we never went back to Lakemba for lunch.

You might think that living in Angourie we are safe from the horrors of Islamic terrorism. But you would be wrong. A few years ago, a close friend, the owner of a local café, lost her lovely brother, beheaded by the Muslim Brotherhood for no other reason than they could get away with it, while he was working as a contractor in the Middle East.

While Chas and I can rave about our personal encounters with Muslims, the freedom to openly disagree with each other is precisely what is at stake.

When Viktor Frankl reflected upon his experiences as a Nazi concentration camp prisoner, including time spent at Auschwitz, he concluded that humanity can basically be divided into two races:

“From all this, we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two — the “race” of the decent man and the “race” of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people.”

While I agree with the sentiment of Frankl’s message, if “Peaceful Muslims” don’t call out the dangerous radicals among them, can they be considered decent? And if we don’t call it out, can we consider ourselves decent, no matter what our spiritual or philosophical persuasion?

What’s indecent is kicking this can down the road so our children have to deal with it.

That’s shameful.

I take the Islamist radicals at their word when they say that they want the entire world to be obeying Sharia Law by the end of this century. So far, they’re doing a very good job of it. Not least by accusing us of Islamophobia whenever we call them out for doing exactly what they boast they are doing.

Fear of being labelled Islamophobic effectively shuts down rational and reasonable conversation and debate about their most recent slaughter.

They are taking advantage of our willingness to let them practice their religion, in our countries, while simultaneously admitting to their plans of preventing us from practicing ours, anywhere, including our agnosticism and atheism.

Naivety will not protect us from the fury of our descendants, when they learn that we gave away our civilisation because we were too scared to make a stand.

Talking peacefully with our enemy may sound good to the softheaded but overlooking avoidable catastrophes and not dealing with current problems because it’s uncomfortable only lets these problems grow bigger.

It is the way of the weak. And we will be remembered for it.

I don’t think this ‘rebuttal’ is anything of the sort: it doesn’t address Chad’s central premise (the west undermines its moral high ground by killing innocents) – it makes a completely different argument (west is too scared of being labelled islamaphobic to stand up to a real threat). Good argument, mind you.

So you are basing your use and justification of ‘past’, on your conveniently loose idea, your use of relevance. 200 years is quite current compared to 60,000. Its very, very convenient this ‘moving on’ . Maybe you feel guilty and are hiding from that?

“As radical Islamist threats continue to plague Australia, politicians are pivoting to policing speech and tightening gun laws on law-abiding citizens—now openly admitting curbs on free expression are needed to shield their multicultural agenda.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has unveiled a sweeping plan to combat what she calls rising anti-Semitism, but the measures conveniently sidestep the core issue of unchecked radical Islamism behind recent attacks, focusing instead on doxxing anonymous social media users and reviewing gun laws.

In a joint news conference, Allan announced legislation that would force social media platforms to reveal identities behind anonymous accounts accused of spreading ‘hate’. “Under Victoria’s civil anti-vilification scheme which starts in 2026, the speaker of a vilifying statement generally needs to be identifiable and held accountable,” she stated.”

Surfers and the surfer-adjacent squabbling on behalf of those feisty folk of various hues of tan is a waste of time. As if the men pulling the strings from air-conditioned safety will ever be swayed by the braying masses throwing verbal stones back and forth. It’s always been and always will be the $ (beyond what we can ever comprehend) that call the shots so we should be building bridges not burning them.
And no, I’m not softheaded, I’ve got more than enough dusty miles under the belt to be routinely pulled aside into the smaller rooms whilst navigating customs.

This article is very likely the product of a brain, mediocre at best at birth, receiving poor to spotty education in formative years, ravaged by decades of drugs, alcohol and lips to the head, soaked in Fox/Sky News, then fried to a crisp by algorithms.

Kwan

So you view the reactions and reflections to the Bondi shootings as weak and destructive?

Tom House

Neither do all Arabs. Are you confusing Arab w Muslim? Anyway, your mind seems to work exactly like those you seem to hate. Black/white thinking, dehumanizing others, etc.

Rhino

Freddy Pawle?

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

wtf happened in here?

goofyfoot

Blowin carrying on his swellnet legacy of posting then deleting every comment and ruining the flow of the discussion.

In the mire with other stuff

Strayan Cunt

No dramas brother. Why was my question deleted? There was absolutely nothing wrong with it hahahaha

Chazz Michael Michaels

I have no idea! Someone is fucking with someone. I’ve got no clue what’s happened on this thread.

Strayan Cunt

This joints gone delete crazy hahaha. I keep seeing posts, then they’re gone and other ones have replaced them so it’s impossible to tell what the fucks going on haha. Negs do something man!!!!!

Shack man

Another boomer clown.

‘Fear of being labelled Islamophobic effectively shuts down rational and reasonable conversation and debate’

…exactly the same thing is done conflating antizionism with anti-Semitism. It attempts to shut down all reasonable debate of the Israeli gov.

FL Skunk Ape

I can find cells of terrible/evil people from all races/walks of life right here in the good ole USA. Sad that people have such myopic views.

NEGATRON

You’ll have to pull your head in with the deleting. Odd one ok but when it leaves holes everywhere on a thread it’s a shithouse read.

Peaceful Muslims are working very hard to root out radicalism. Every time an atrocity happens they denounce it and those who committed it, yet the media don’t pick this up as a story. Ahmed Al-Ahmed takes a bullet trying to take down the shooter and the media speculated – is this guy actually a Christian? Nope, just another Muslim.

Isis is to Islam as the KKK is to Christianity. Yes, more could be done to stop extremist imams spreading their poison. The Saudis have been exporting Wahabbism for decades now using their oil dollars – whenever a mosque gets destroyed, the friendly Wahabbis are there offering the rebuild or restore it. They whitewash the walls which were covered with intricate patterns and send a new fundamentalist imam who preaches naive, literalist interpretations of the Qur’an and stamps out peaceful, beautiful strands of Islamic faith like Sufism.

If you want to understand the soul of Islam, go read Rumi and Hafez. Go read about the life of ‘Ali, son-in-law of Muhammad. Then look at these monsters who profess to be Muslims and shake your head.

Rhino

Well said. Wahabbism i.e. “Petro Islam” (whose export around the world is funded by the west’s addiction to oil) has received scant attention in the debate thus far on this site

c4

I’ve been known to drink a few beers before a mid morning paddle out, so not judging.

NEGATRON

He has an opinion. But this was too far.

Gravy

Just when the stink of Fred Pawle had almost lifted from the surfing space Derek has gone and found himself another small, weird, self righteous scared middle aged gimp. Cool.

NEGATRON

Ha! He’s the new voice of Ain’t that swell.

Gravy

Hopefully you don’t mean Pawle. There’s nothing swell about that guy’s voice. Of all his irredeemable features the voice is the most un-deemable.

NEGATRON

He’s been on 3 podcast in a row with Jed. The last one was pretty full on. Jed handled him well and challenged him but it was pretty ugly at times.

Chazz Michael Michaels

Yeah his coat might be on a shoogly peg, as they say

Gravy

I don’t listen to Ain’t That Swell. I’ve had barneys with Jed in the past about his working class hero act, (always really liked Vaughn though). Jed and Fred Pawle together arguing about fields they’re highly opinionated nobodies in sounds like a punishment that even I don’t deserve.

Com Turren

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, but I also feel like denying being Monty is precisely something that Monty would do.

Com Turren

I don’t get it though. You’ve spent all this time talking shit below the line with the rest of us under various Disqus handles (if Hippy is accurate that you are Monty), but when it’s your article and the opinions therein that people talk shit about, you take it personally.

And if you’re not Monty, you’re still coming across as a bit thin-skinned for an Aussie just the same.

Montana Surfers Journal

Haha holy shit man you’re properly chapped! You let the demons in deep
