Australian wraps fabulous year; Hawaiian with South African accent qualifies for main event…
In onshore four-foot waves reminiscent of summertime Australia, Ryan Callinan has won the Pipe Masters Trials and, therefore, entry into the main event.
Ryan, who is twenty-six, negotiated, cleanly, two tubes, finishing a wonderfully successful 2018 where he placed fourth on the qualifying series and second as a wildcard at the Quiksilver Pro in France.
You may remember Ryan as a rookie on the tour in 2016 where he struggled, terribly, to replicate his dazzling surfing (as seen in Kai Neville’s movies) and where he finished 34th and was relegated back to the bush leagues.
Runner-up to Ryan, the South African/Hawaiian, Benji Brand, will also compete in the main event.
“I used to really hate Pipe,” says Benji here, “but I’ve grown to love it. I see it’s where the epitome of surfing and barrel-riding is. I used to be terrible out there.”
“They’re humble warriors, they throw themselves under the hood, left and right,” said Joe Turpel.
Ross Williams, moonlighting as a commentator with his star pupil still out of the game, described Pipe as “schizophrenic”, which it clearly was.

“SCHIZOPHRENIC pipe” not cool people, would you refer to it as Autistic pipe? Down syndrome pipe? Diabetes pipe maybe? ALS pipe even? People labeled with schizophrenia have a tough enough gig as it is without these kinds of slurs which you may not of meant any harm, however it only adds to the hideous stigma in which media and society already through its way. We need to help the vulnerable people in society, not throw them under the bus.
What’s up with the interviews and presenters, these days, always looking like Mom whom just got out of the kitchen baking bread…is it just me or has the respect for the winner gone out the window. If it can be a legend presenting make it a playmate or a clown…. something….give the guy a gift!

Interesting to see Ryan‘s CT ratings from his two wild cards in Europe have him rated above Ibelli , Slater, Pupo, Asing and the two Hawaiian Wildcards and he won’t come up against the three title contenders in round 1 .
Could see him be in the running for the title next year, he is currently on fire!

I thought Bruce would smoke the Pipe qualifiers. He’s usually got the prescription to win (unless he forgets it in Kauai) w/ scores at least .08 more than average.
Job and Bruce don’t know how to qs grovel any more – they had shit waves in H1.
